Harry
Can add Lansing to the list of those with their snowiest Feb on record. February 2011 Sets Snowfall Records February 2011 will enter the record books as the snowiest February on record at Lansing. It will also rank in second place at Grand Rapids and fourth place at Muskegon. Most of the snow fell in two big storms. The blizzard on the 1st and 2nd dumped over a foot and another storm on the 20th and 21st dropped about 8 to 10 inches. There has been a trend lately for February being a very snowy month. At Grand Rapids...three of the past five years have had a February land in the top five snowiest on record and four of the last five have placed in the top ten. At Lansing, three of the last four Februarys have placed in the top 10 snowiest. At Muskegon, the past five Februarys have all placed in the top 23 snowiest on record, with two of them in the top five. All three of these sites have records going back over 100 years. Here are the top five snowiest February rankings at those three sites with snowfall in inches: Grand Rapids 2008...41.6 2011...38.2 1900...35.5 2007...33.6 1994...29.6 Lansing 2011...29.1 2008...27.6 1900...25.4 1926...24.8 1912...24.3 Muskegon 1981...45.8 2008...41.7 1962...40.2 2011...36.4 1965...35.

kerbs
A Brief Review of the 2010-11 Winter Season... PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON OH 1100 AM EST TUE MAR 1 2011 WAS THE 2010-11 WINTER SEASON REALLY COLD AND SNOWY? PERHAPS THE ANSWER IS YES AND NO. EXAMINING DATA FOR CINCINNATI, COLUMBUS, AND DAYTON WILL SHOW SOME INTERESTING STATISTICS AND MAY ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS RAISED. AS FOR TEMPERATURES, THIS WINTER SEASON IS THE COLDEST ON RECORD SINCE 2003 FOR COLUMBUS AND DAYTON, WHILE AT CINCINNATI IT WAS ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN THE 2009-10 WINTER. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR COLUMBUS WAS 27.7 DEGREES WITH NORMAL AT 31.3 DEGREES. DAYTON'S AVERAGE WAS 26.4 WITH NORMAL AT 29.3 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE FOR THE WINTER AT CINCINNATI WAS 29.5 WITH NORMAL AT 32.8 DEGREES. THIS MAKES IT THE 13TH COLDEST WINTER AT DAYTON, 18TH COLDEST AT CINCINNATI, AND 28TH COLDEST AT COLUMBUS. WHILE NO DAILY RECORDS WERE SET, IT WAS THE MORE CONSISTENTLY COLD OR BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES THAT PREVAILED ESPECIALLY FOR DECEMBER, JANUARY AND THE FIRST HALF OF FEBRUARY. AS FOR SNOWFALL, CINCINNATI HAS RECEIVED THE MOST SO FAR WITH 32.4 INCHES FOR THE SEASON. NORMAL SNOWFALL AT CINCINNATI IS 23.6 INCHES. WHILE THIS IS ABOVE NORMAL, IT IS LESS THAN LAST YEARS 38 INCHES AND RANKS 21ST FOR THE SEASON WITH SNOWFALL RECORDS DATING BACK TO 1839. MEANWHILE, COLUMBUS HAS RECEIVED 25.4 INCHES THIS SEASON WITH DAYTON ONLY RECEIVING 24.5 INCHES. NORMAL SEASONAL SNOWFALL FOR COLUMBUS IS 28.8 INCHES WITH DAYTON'S NORMAL AT 29.2 INCHES. A MORE INTERESTING STATISTIC IS SNOW DEPTH. DAYTON HAS HAD 58 DAYS WITH AT LEAST ONE INCH OF SNOW ON THE GROUND. THIS IS THE MOST DAYS SINCE THE 1977-78 SEASON WITH ONLY 3 OTHER YEARS WITH MORE DAYS. COLUMBUS HAS HAD 48 DAYS WITH AT LEAST ONE INCH ON THE GROUND. THIS IS THE MOST SINCE 1984-85 WITH ONLY 5 OTHER YEARS WITH MORE DAYS. CINCINNATI HAS HAD 43 DAYS WITH AT LEAST AN INCH ON THE GROUND. THIS IS THE MOST SINCE 2002-03 WITH ONLY 5 OTHER YEARS WITH MORE DAYS. THE CONSISTENTLY COLD TEMPERATURES FOR MUCH OF THE WINTER PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THIS STATISTIC. WHILE THE METEOROLOGICAL WINTER SEASON HAS CONCLUDED, MORE COLD TEMPERATURES CAN OCCUR INTO THE MONTH OF MARCH. THE SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTALS AND SNOW DEPTH DAYS MAY ALSO INCREASE AS THE OFFICIAL SNOW SEASON DOES NOT END UNTIL JUNE 30TH. SOME SPRING STORMS HAVE BROUGHT SIGNIFICANT SNOW AMOUNTS TO THE OHIO VALLEY IN THE PAST. THE DATA COMPILED BELOW WILL PROVIDE FURTHER INSIGHT INTO THE INFORMATION PRESENTED ABOVE. AppsRunner
I'm about 1.5" above TOL's observations... most likely from a couple events (Feb. 5th, 21st, and the last Feb. Storm) that had about 1/2"-1" more here then TOL... otherwise they match up well. 48-50" at TOL is a good year though... over 125% of normal. michsnowfreak
FNT has now leapfrogged DTW 69.6" to 67.5", though since FNT averages a bit more, DTW still leads the departures +26.6 to +25.3". Pretty much anyone in any given area of the midwest has noticed the snowy winters in recent years, but to a stat buff like me its more. Its staggering to see SO many midwest cities seeing what, their 4th or 5th winter the past decade with departures of 2-3 FEET above normal. Special times we are in folks, special times.
