I see why I confused the two.....they both happened in Jan 2004 and they both ended in the morning! So the mid Jan 2004 event was the one with the extremely high ratios and the late Jan 2004 event was the one with the pink snow? I still remember the wide variance in snowfall..... Far Rockaway had almost 11 inches while JFK was closer to 6.5! Did this one not have the extreme ratios of the prior storm and were the temps not as cold? I think this was the pink snow storm that I still remember all these years later.

wdrag
Will add CoCoRaHs two day around 10A and probably repost these graphics below on the initial thread for review. In essence... our first week of January snowstorms in the northeast. No negative NAO and no positive PNA. The indices are nice but I still think it's location-location-timing-timing. Anyone look back at the NAM banding graphics for S+. Pretty interestingly accurate.

It looks like the ASOS may have undermeasured the actual liquid equivalent of the snow. The NWS has noted this at certain ASOS stations in the past during heavy snows. Other North Shore observers picked up nearly .50 of precipitation https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/96964b6457794d2196dff24d68d4688d Sometimes the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) can struggle to melt snow for liquid equivalent in heavier snowfall. wdrag
I'm no longer up to speed on ASOS snow melt but I agree it could still be a problem. I just want everyone to see those indicies where these events occurred Jan 3 and 7 and again, helpful NAM Banding guidance showing potential 1+"/hr. Didn't even know this was an issue. LGA was likely closer to 20:1 or less. Still very impressive for being down on the water basically.

The trees here are full of snow, just like a heavy wet snow.....8.1 inches on 0.90 precip? Wow, that's actually, 9:1, might explain the lower snow totals down here? Wow, that's actually, 9:1, might explain the lower snow totals down here? Chris do you have the official JFK ratios? Either way the snow down here was really wet and caked all the trees until they were bent over.....until the wind started up and blew it all down lol. Walt.... 8.1 inches of snow here on 0.90" precip jives well with how heavy and wet the snow was here, all the trees are literally caked in snow! 9:1 ratio.....I wonder what it was at JFK?

JFK: 8.1" on .9 precip but Flushing Meadows 7.9" on .53" precip. Didn't happen they were both along the same band. The .53" is probably correct for both sites. Gives about 15:1 ratios.

I just want everyone to see those indicies where these events occurred Jan 3 and 7 and again, helpful NAM Banding guidance showing potential 1+"/hr. Just based on my own experiences with my standard 4" COCORAHS gauge, which might not be a valid comparison, they catch rain a lot better than snow. At the time I measured 9.1" on the ground yesterday, there was an uneven (stacked higher on one side) 2" of snow in the guage (I had removed the center and top prior to the storm). I'm not sure what the physics/mechanics of this is, but I've seen it many times. I emptied the paltry catch from the guage and used it to get a clean core of the snow on the ground which melted down to 0.65", a hair under 15:1. The snow depth here this morning was 6", so that 15:1 stuff compacted quickly. 1

Did the NYC number go up too? Where is the final report?

I'm un sure of NOHRSC practices but am sure they use filters and the longer we wait after the event ends, the more complete the data set. We in the NWS could produce these types of maps back in 2018, but it's a bit time consuming ensuring the data is correct. Staffing and other priorities may preclude? Crazy difference between LGA and Central Park-4” difference in a few miles. The jackpot locally may have been N Nassau. A couple of 9” amounts there.

I think our snow was wetter here on the south shore.
