Brian D
Temps running -15 to -20 with wind chills up to -45. Wind chill warning has been out for N MN this morning. Always have to look at the old vs new wind chill charts. A good part of my life was under the old values, and they are still ingrained in me. Based on temp and wind, the -45 is -60 under the old. -60 to -75 wind chills were common back in the day, which equates to -45 to -55 now.
michsnowfreak
Our 2.7" New Year's snowfall did it's best to hang on through a zzzzz 1st 9 days of January, But thanks to yesterday's pointless mid to upper 30s damp thaw We now have just patches and piles of frozen Snipes. Extended pattern has clipper potential but any details are going to be non existent before anything gets into short range.
Hoosier
Went back and checked something from last year. ORD seasonal snowfall total on 1/10/2021: 5.4" ORD seasonal snowfall total on 1/10/2022: 6.1" Will a rally as big as last year come walking through the door? Tall order, but anything can happen.
Brian D
Been boiling a pot of water today to bring the humidity up in the house. Very dry, and it also gives the furnace a little break. Runs hard on cold, windy days.
madwx
already about to dip below 0 here, a run at the negative double digits looks possible, will be a good test of how good of a radiator my property is on clear calm nights

Over the 100" mark for the season.
madwx
Only made it down to -5 last night. S wind picked up earlier than expected and halted any temp drop. Already up to 11 on our way to around 28 today.

madwx
low 40s and full sun is starting to eat away at the snowpack, can see some bare ground on S facing yards. The past 24 hours has really overperformed temps here

McHenrySnow
Just now, Hoosier said: Icy layer on top of the snow from the freezing rain this past weekend may be helping to slow the melt? Helping here, but I've got nowhere near 3". Front yard likely to be largely bare outside of piles. The wind prior to the freezing drizzle really caused a lot of blowing and drifting, so it's pretty sporadic. Models sure have been depressing and reality even moreso. Kind of seems like it. Sort of a poor man's version of last season's mega-glacier from multiple heavy sleet/freezing rain events lol.
Hoosier
Probably doesn't hurt having dews below freezing too. You really melt fast when both temps and dews are well above freezing.
cyclone77
Been socked in with very dense fog much of the morning. Kind of a strange, isolated pocket of fog. Not too far to the west in the QC they are sunny at both DVN and MLI. Visibility here is probably under a quarter mile atm.
cyclone77
13 degree difference now between MLI and here, as we are still socked in with <1/4 mile in fog @ 30 vs 43 and sunny at MLI. The back edge of the fog looks like it's only a few miles west of here now, so could be a dramatic change within the hour.
hawkeye_wx
We were not expected to hit 40º this week, but we've now done it three straight days. The snow cover is gone, briefly, as soon as you head southwest from Cedar Rapids. I still have a couple inches in my yard.
madwx
another sunny day hitting 40 here as well. these past two days have part of me wishing this were March 13th and we were about to pivot into spring
cyclone77
Man this is crazy, visibility right now is probably only a few hundred feet. The sky directly overhead now has some blue in it, and the sun is very dimly visible. Guessing this fog is extremely shallow now, yet it is about as dense as fog can get. About 5 miles west of here near the county border according to satellite it's totally clear.

vortex
Oops. Initially put this in the wrong thread. Ice jams few miles down stream Tuesday, has since melted. Something to see during these boring weather times
frostfern
13" max depth IMBY from combo of lake effect events last week has already shrunk down to 3.5". Probably less than half actually melted. It settled to 7" even before it got above freezing. It was mostly air.
