Extreme cold with no snow cover can kill them. If you hate ticks you don’t want a lot of snow on the ground when we get the frigid weather. This weekend may beat some back! Just before the snows came last week, I actually saw a butterfly near my bedroom window. I was utterly shocked that there were still butterflies here. I guess it's gone now. Usually you start worrying about Monarch butterflies in the early fall if you still see them here. They have to leave for Mexico!

jm1220
Our coldest air masses come down from due north as others noted. The strong NW winds also downslope somewhat which causes heating, and come from the modifying lakes.

It's compared to how cold the rest of winter has been-- I'm sure a lot of people are shocked it can still get this cold. I just hope we don't have more of these fires. wdrag
Looking periodically very cold here 21st-28th, my guess is colder than what occurred yesterday the 11th or this Saturday the 15th. Could be two more significant storms here, around the 21st and 25th and our coldest of the winter may arrive after one of those. Yesterdays CPC threats in the LR are added.

High temperatures will likely reach upper 30s and lower 40s in most of the region. Likely high temperatures around the region include: New York City (Central Park): 38° Newark: 40° Philadelphia: 42° Normals: New York City: 30-Year: 39.3°; 15-Year: 40.2° Newark: 30-Year: 39.8°; 15-Year: 40.9° Philadelphia: 30-Year: 41.1°; 15-Year: 42.0° Another shot of cold air is likely this weekend. wdrag
Good morning again, No thread e LI/e CT/E MA this morning for Fri morning of 1/14. Models basically dry. Still not convinced there won't be a band of snow in the FGEN zone, as added below. Also, I keep looking at the GEFS and impressive attempt at cold shot after the 22nd and continues cold looking through at least the 28th.
ForestHillWx
That is pretty incredible re:temp spike with the wind shift on LI. 15 here currently; the overnight low was 6. In the area lower spots its still in the single digits per wunderground; not sure on accuracy.

So this will allow for even colder temperature potential than we’ll see this weekend. Places with a shorter period of observations like JFK could come near record lows later in January. We’ll see if some stations with longer observation periods can approach record lows.The last time JFK had record lows in late January was 2019. 1/25 5 in 1961 7 in 2004 8 in 1963 1/26 9 in 2007 9 in 1994 13 in 1961 1/27 2 in 1994 8 in 2003 9 in 2005 1/28 6 in 2005 7 in 2003 7 in 1966 1/29 3 in 1977 9 in 1966 10 in 2005 1/30 7 in 2019 8 in 1952 10 in 1977+ 1/31 3 in 2019 10 in 1977 11 in 1962 Hopefully a lot of snow to go along with the cold.
