They get some monsters from time to time though in the central NY zone.  West of ALB and north of BGM have had numerous 36”+ events past 15 years.

If you go back another 5 years you get Xmas 2002 also. I remember a couple 40-burgers NW of ALB in that one.

Points of equal temperature are shown with the diagonal dotted lines. So where that red temp line crosses the dotted line at about 800mb, you can move down the dotted line and see that the temp for that dotted line is 0C. Therefore temp at 800mb is ever so slightly above 0C (hence the sleet depiction)

Omg wow. That is odd coming from someone who is used to normal graphs. So basically where it says 10c that is not delineated by a line perfectly vertical, but diagonal. I knew there just had to be something I was doing wrong because I’m not stupid enough to believe the other people who frequent this board are going to make such an oversight. In fact as a mere hobbyist, albeit a lifetime one, I only recently became interested in these “sounding” reports and previously just avoided them.

You were definitely below 32. Even the guy in Hingham I think just sneaked barely above freezing briefly.

I put in a request from NOAA's National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) for maximum temps at Randolph for 2/6/78 and 2/7/78.  They emailed a list of cities in E MA, of which the closest to Randolph was Brockton.  The max there was 34F on the 6th and 35F on the 7th.  Hingham had a max of 34F on the 6th and 32F on the 7th.  By comparison, Boston was 34F on the 6th and 33F on the 7th.

My main point being there was no fluff factor with that snow, limiting the drifting in many areas, despite the strong winds.

I think those maxes were brief. Like one day maybe briefly with the coastal front and then the other when it ended? I mean 34 in Hingham means you likely were colder.

Temps during most of the storm varied only a couple of degrees.  Randolph temps would have been more like Brockton than Hingham, which is only a few miles away.  The storm didn't end until very late on the 7th.

Sometimes those thermos back then can be affected by solar radiation.
Any case, it was a qpf bomb for sure. Not a fluff job by any means.

My school’s roof collapsed under the weight of the snow.   We had a very extended Feb vacation.  Best winter ever

If anybody has reports or Pics I’m all for it. I know 40” amounts happened and believe it for sure. Those pics were epic.

I think most of those  DEC 20 40+" reports were just ruler in the ground reports, there really wasn't enough time for any clearing, it was all in like 9-10 hours. One clear would have been the max, if it was even done. Im not sure how much the total would have increased from that one clear anyway--maybe in the absolute max spot could have been near uppper 40s to 50".  No one had 50"+ on the ground, but pretty damn close.  There are pics of 42-44" OTG.  I measured 33-34" OTG a full 30 hours after it stopped in that prime zone just north of me, obviously it was pure fluff so it was settling quickly, showing it was certainly 40"+ OTG the day prior, but 50" probably a stretch.

Ludlow Vermont had 40", across from you here in Townshend we had 30"

I don’t fully understand the practice of “clearing” because to me it seeks to inflate or alter what is actually going on. What I mean is that…. Since we, as laymen, measure snow depth by how deep the snow is on the ground, it should be measured just as it ends up by the end of storm. The action of clearing is like half-way to the practice of measuring water content in the snow. The water content may vary but 2 inches of snow is read as 2 inches of snow.

If it were me I just stick a ruler in the snowpack and measure it’s depth. I can get an alternative true measurement by measuring the water content within. But since we measure snowfall by it’s accumulation as laymen and not it’s water content, might was well not bother clearing just because we know that by the time 20 inches has fallen as a snowpack, it’s gonna be compacted to a certain extent. In my mind clearing several times to exclude settling is not relevant… it only measures what the accumulation could have been if only it were not subjected to the laws of physics.

who am I to argue about procedures, but it’s how I understand it.

Well, we have certainly had the clear vs no clear debate too many times to mention on here...lol.

Been down this road before, but in short, the more snow you get the more the weight of it compacts upon itself. In LES areas like BUF you can get a 2 day event where the rates could be the same both days yet the depth doesn't change at all (or even drops) on day 2. Does that mean day 2 should go in as 0" for the day even though with clearing it was the same as day 1? That's an extreme example, but it's happened like that before out there. 6hrs has become the accepted clearing threshold that allows for some compaction yet doesn't overinflate it too much.

I’m sure you have!

And now that we are done with that it’s time to argue about the standard size kitchen trash cans and bags is too small. If you live in a big apartment it’s annoying to have to take it out almost every single day. If only they changed 13 gallon to…. 19 gallon. Might be better.

It’s a compelling argument…. Because if you do clear a surface after 4 inches of snow, then 5 more inches subsequently accumulated on said surface, you got your 5 inches. But the earth does not clear itself in such a way. Your back yard is going to have the end result of the two events.

The solution could be offered to just say “the water content of our snowpack increased by .30 today. There are now 9 inches of snow on the ground, when yesterday there was 7.5”

In a storm without much wind, the clearing method should be quite accurate.  But what happens in a storm with 30-40 MPH winds?  How accurate is it then?  Especially with powder.

image.png.31228e5ce4320a57a7db49a842a80041.pngThe polar vortex is extremely strong and is expected to deepen again, yet the pattern looks great on the models. Looking at this I would think 2011-2012, but that clearly isn’t the case. What’s going on here? I read that although the polar vortex is strong, it isn’t super consolidated, had a minor disruption already, and is expected to have another mid month. Or is it more that the pattern is being driven by other factors like the pacific and MJO? Maybe instead of an extended duration episode of North Atlantic blocking we score via a great pacific and overall positive NAO, but transient periods of blocking?

Its almost impossible IMO. I never clear in any wind events, which I get from time to time here. And they are normally more on the dry side, so it just blows off the board.

What’s interesting is the extended range is trending better as well despite the strong polar vortex. The CFS has shifted from a blowtorch Feb to showing avg temps. There is also some ridging poking into Alaska which hopefully would counteract the limited North Atlantic blocking. We had blocking the entire December and nothing to show for it due to one of the worst pacific patterns on record. There was a massive trough out west.

Not to derail the thread, but NWS tossed 2 potential 24hr VT state records from DEC 20 near me in SVT-Peru and Landgrove. They don't specify clears, but say "NWS guidines" not followed or something.
