olafminesaw
About a quarter of the GFS ensembles show big mixy hits. Most of the rest are pretty suppressed or the energy cuts to our west and it's too warm
BornAgain13
Yep. 6z gfs is a Major ice storm next Sunday for the piedmont.

olafminesaw
The 0z Icon also has a pretty significant snow to ice storm (mostly ice)

Definitely has me a bit worried with such a strong signal showing up on the globals at this lead time. Usually tends to be a bit stronger signal once mesoscales get in range. Unlike some that whine about sleet, I love it. It is the absolute best for sledding, and it takes forever to melt. As for freezing rain, it is my least favorite of the 3, but still far better than CR. TW

I wouldn't say I'm excited, but this is a weather board and I'm interested in weather, regardless of the degree to which I enjoy it. Ice storms are fascinating from a meteorological perspective, even if they are the saddest of frozen precip types

eyewall
The parent high is exiting as this occurs on the GFS which means shorter duration CAD. It is more of a Hybrid CAD event as opposed to classical. It is better than In-situ though.

PackGrad05
Yes, freezing rain accrual is a self-limiting process UNLESS you have a constant, reinforcing supply of shallow cold air... In other words around here, you need a strong and persistent CAD for the duration that doesn't erode or retreat.
burrel2
ukmet is setting up for a nice winter storm at hr 144... finger of precip breaking out and extending through gainesville, GA. Soundings look like it would start as snow in the Upstate before switching to sleet.

Also, I’d have to check but as much as we crap on the EURO imo it was decent last two events, Was first (even though it left it) to show further West Snow Accums 2 weeks ago, and this weekend it was first to go away from pure coastal QPF to the deform scenario…. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but that’s Jmo it bounces more than it used to but it’s not a clown model as some here may think
Brick Tamland
GFS showing that now is concerning, though, since it usually underestimates the CAD.
