NWS Storm Prediction Center

@NWSSPC

Today (12/15) has set the record for the most number of hurricane force (75+ mph) thunderstorm wind gusts in a day (55, and counting) since 2004. The previous record was from August 10, 2020 with 53.

Amazing to do that in December and basically entirely north of 40N

Wow, Redwood Falls MN reporting 78mph winds with heavy snow 1/4 mile vis.  They were in the 50s a few hours ago.

Marshalltown IA ASOS gusted to 81mph about an hour ago.

This is the most impressive synoptic wind event I've ever seen in my years, for the midwest.  I was thinking the Nov 98 event was tops, but this one definitely takes it.

Wind has come up some mix precip. Suppose to get plain snow around noon. 1-2 inches today and a couple more. Lots of power outages Marquette county and east of Lake Linden/Dollar Bay. No outages so far here in Houghton-Hancock. Lights have blinked a few times but stayed on. Lost lots of snow here in Hancock. Half my yard is down to grass. Even the path I take the snowblower in the yard has melted off. So this is the second time of beating it down and it melted off. Hope third time is the charm and it will stay all winter.

Pretty interesting evolution locally last night. In the GeoColor CIRA image below, there is some wildfire smoke (and possibly dust) evident over the Great Lakes, which no doubt came from the Plains late yesterday. All the local obs dropped below 6SM in HZ as dry air surged in (subsidence? dry line?) behind the remnant showers. Note the pressure rises, drop in dews and slow temperature fall at ORD.

Power went out here a little after 5 this morning and is still out.  Snow is currently spreading in from the west as the temp drops toward freezing.  Lots of sticks and small branches all over the place may just have to wait until spring for cleanup.  Solid snow cover still in place but it's pretty battered looking.

Sleeping w/o a fan is the worst.

Wow for us to get a dry line, let alone in December is nuts.
