Stebo
Minneapolis could be a nightmare. Some of my family is driving out to Omaha... hope they leave sooner rather then later. Yeah I have a friend who was planning on leaving from Idaho Falls to Chicago tonight, I told him forget about it.
prinsburg_wx
This storm might be more interesting that we thought! from UNR "Rapid City" AFD STORM SYSTEM TO OUR SOUTHWEST LOOKS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE ON WATER VAPOUR THIS EVENING. 00Z UPPER AIR ANALYSIS SUGGESTED SYSTEM WAS STRONGER THAN WHAT 12Z/18Z MODELS HAD IN MIND...LIGHTNING OVER SOUTHERN NV...ON NOSE OF 130KT JET STREAK. what this means for us when it gets here who knows but most 0Z models tonight were a little stronger but also more west with the heavy snow...anymore west then my area is screwed but maybe it's time to pay the piper...7" shy of 3 feet for the month so i won't complain if i miss this one. Yeah, this west trend isn't good for me either. Warmer temps and dry slot problems. I guess we will see how this all plays out.

Omahawx
You may all think you have your problems, but when it comes to the screw zone in the country, its eastern Nebraska /western Iowa. I've only managed 3 inches this month with every decent storm going northeast by 100 miles..this week i actually thought we could get a good one,but alas, its going just west and north of the area. what a pathetic winter

But I wouldnt know because ive never had that much snow sover so I could be wrong.

JeffnBenn
For Omaha I do not recall what the total snowfall was for December but for the entire winter we saw 50 - 60 inches. (Ended up breaking records for length of time snow was on the ground.)

What a way to end the year with back to back storms! could get quite interesting tomorrow...FSD mentions thundersnow in their AFD ATMOSPHERE BECOMES INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE AHEAD OF THE WAVE EAST OF THE JAMES RIVER VALLEY IN SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA INCLUDING THE I-29 CORRIDOR THROUGH SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA. CERTAINLY A POTENTIAL FOR THUNDERSNOW ACROSS THIS AREA...AND IF THIS OCCURS FORECASTED AMOUNTS WOULD BE ON THE CONSERVATIVE SIDE.
dissident
drove to watertown SD this morning about a 45 mile drive from Brookings to get some shopping done.. was raining then about 15 miles from town suddenly the interstate turns to ice and it changes to sleet, then snow 2 miles from watertown. Snowing at 930AM already. Temps were 34 in brookings and 22 in watertown 45 miles to north... drove back right away after shopping... was gonna stay but no way... the sleet rain line advanced to about 10 miles from brookings.. got the last of the shopping done and got in the garage just in time for the temps to start falling (could feel it) and everything freezing up with the sleet starting... this was around 11:15. Took until about 2 for the change from sleet to all snow, only about an inch or two for the first round.. amazing what a 45 mile difference can make. They probably got 4 inches there, which will put them 2-3 inches higher for round one, however they had less on the ground up to this point. Just glad we got something to cover up the brown snow and got rid of that sleet. So far, going pretty much according to forecast. Lessor amounts for the first storm, a couple more inches west and north.

MN Transplant
well it won't but it will make one hell of a mess The um, beauty(?), of rain falling onto a thick snow pack and then freezing up in a day or two is that the remaining snowcover is going to be around forever.
