Official total so far from 5am is 6.1".  Still lightly snowing, at least a st looks like the backend could hang around for a bit.  Maybe we officially squeak out 8".

I’m about 10 miles from the airport and have 8.25” on the ground. Possibly some additional accumulation today

The radar pivot and banding last night was awesome. I can’t see that .47” at the airport being accurate, but I don’t think a 2” hour was out of the question. I caught more the tail of that same band and it was rippin.

A line from Weirton to Beaver falls will break a foot. That area did better with avoiding a prolong dry slot before everything pivoted. Most of the rest of us got caught up in it a little too long. Still a beautiful morning

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA
802 AM EST Mon Jan 17 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moving across the Mid-Atlantic region will result in
continued snowfall today. Afterward, cold weather will persist all
week long with intermittent snow chances.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Frontogenesis and vorticity advection are still very much present
and contributing to overall ascent on the back side of this eastward
propagating trough. As evident per 12Z KPIT sounding, much colder
air, nw flow has initiated with a saturated profile. Snowfall will
continue to accumulate, heavily at times, depending on location and
enhancement within frontogenesis. An additional 2-3 inches is
generally possible, especially north of Pittsburgh. Several more
inches are likely in the higher elevations as upslope will be
favored.

Sustained wind speed and gusts will increase in the higher terrain
of the WV and PA Alleghenies on Monday, which will likely result in
blowing snow and lowered visibility.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Tonight, coverage in snow showers will gradually taper off, though
isolated snow showers will remain with lake enhancement of lingering
vorticity advection and upslope. Light accumulation is possible
Tuesday morning in the WV ridges and Laurel Mountains.

Tuesday day will be cold and mostly cloudy, with a cloud deck
attempting to erode from the south through the day. Look for highs in
the upper 20s to low 30s.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low pressure propagating sewd across the Great Lakes will provide
the chance for precipitation on Monday, with likely a frontal passage
that could result in progressive precip chances of rain/snow mix.

Long range model ensembles indicate that a cold stretch is likely,
with low temperature progged in the single digits on Thursday and
Friday nights.

&&

.AVIATION /13Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
IFR with periods of low-MVFR and LIFR will persist through the morning
as a low pressure system moves northward across the Mid- Atlantic.
The most significant restrictions will occur in a deformation snow
band as it pivots across just about all area terminals, with likely
sub-1SM vis and CIGs under 1kft. With the exception of ZZV,
terminals should receive a few inches of additional snowfall
accumulation.

Cold northwest flow on the backside of the low as it departs will
result in continued MVFR CIGs with scattered lake-enhanced snow
showers. These showers will gradually taper off Monday night into
Tuesday with CIGs gradually breaking up in response to incoming dry
air.

.Outlook...
Widespread VFR conditions are likely to return mid day Tuesday under
building high pressure.

&&

.PBZ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

The snow map shows a report of 7" as of 7 am at the NWS office at 1 N CARNOT-MOON. I believe that's where the official snow records are observed, not at the airport. Given the continued light snow over the past two hours, would have to think they are up to 7.5" or so by now.

I would say 8"+ is a lock for the official storm total, although double digits are probably unlikely unless a few random heavier squalls were to occur in northwest Allegheny County.

It’s Shafer Road in Moon - which is like a mile from the airport. So it essentially mirrors what you would see there.

Yes, I know it's very close to the airport. I just mentioned that to point out the fact that the NWS office report is the official observation.

I use the NWS office and the airport interchangeably. I know it’s technically not correct, but there’s a reason that’s where the office is located and not in the city or something.

Forecast discussion mentioned ensembles suggesting an omega block locking us into a cold pattern for the balance of January. Great for snow retention assuming we can get most of it to survive Wednesday, not so great for additional storms.

Wednesday looks like the only day above freezing at 37-40.  Doubt there will be much loss.  Especially with slight thaws and refreezes over night.

I got some awesome pictures from my family today. Mom and Dad still live in Youngstown. They were expecting 12"+ and that is what they got.  My sisters live around Cleveland. They woke up yesterday thinking 4-6" of snow just south of Cleveland. My sister measured 13.2 this morning at 7am. Looked awesome. Definitely jealous of the total, but i love the way it looks outside right now. 6+ on the ground and good rates coming down. Disappointing, but such is the game. I'll take the beauty any day.

We need snow cover if we’re to have a good chance of ending those streaks I’d like to see end.

Is everybody off the ledge now? Looks like the 6-12 is gonna pan out.

Everybody but one.

Woke up and finally snowing heavily here, but just eyeballing it I'd be surprised if I have more than 4 or 5 inches. I guess I will get to 6 or so, but just a total waste of a storm as I would imagine there are going to be some massive totals out in ohio.
