Europe's deep freeze of 1709 

I came across this article while doing research for the Great Wagon Road of the eastern US. It was interesting reading that I thought I'd share with you all for possible further discussion and maybe research.

Yea, between january and february 1709 it was the only occasion in which "my" Lake Garda, the largest in Italy, froze completely; in other severe winters (like 1929, 1963 or 1985) we have had at most a few frozen bays and ports.
Horse-drawn carriages could pass from the east shore to the west shore !
