As @CAPEs map above shows well, a -WPO only really works for us if we also have a -NAO. It can get western Canada nice and cold, but it teleconnects to a -PNA and ridging over us usually.  Hence storm track to our west. We want that ridge over AK and the Yukon to be in a good spot for us.

Not seeing any strong indications of a -NAO on the ensembles in the LR. That was just a random op run and thus the weenie post for the ridiculously anomalous h5 heights it was depicting. A look like that would be a waste at that time anyway. Mid to late Dec maybe. Not really paid much attention to what the climate/seasonals have been advertising for Dec lately.

Makes last year more frustrating...wasted a perfectly good -NAO! Sheesh...
