It must be a regional thing. My wife's family has strong ties of recent immigration from central and northern Italy and they never, ever called it "gravy" that I have ever heard. I never hear that term down in MD from anyone when referring to sauce for pasta. Just another weird NE thing, probably!

Southern Italy. Acri region. Also Sicily. Mangia e statti zitto.
