Our building codes have improved since 2005. However the surge & inland flooding impacts will still be very bad for many. Ida should continue to slow prolonging the flooding dangers. Agreed, it’s going to be bad for sure, but people thinking along lines of Katrina are way off base.

Yup, especially with late jaunt west. I’d expect storm surge closer to Laura levels that Katrina or Michael.

OSUmetstud
Apparently the surge in New Orleans with Betsy was 10 ft or so. I think this might out-do that in New Orleans. For SE Louisiana, I'm definitely expecting over 15 ft. It's a much larger hurricane than Michael was.

I know that area decently well - the world ends in Houma. Nothing south/east is safe in a storm, for sure.
sojitodd
Looks like it will be going right into Port Fourchon. I am surprised that camera in Grande Isle is still working. Went to bed at 5am(could not fall asleep as this was intensifying) and just woke up a bit ago not knowing what to expect. Hope it keeps nudging to the west. Yeah but better in the swamps than right into NO or the Mississippi Coast-especially viewing that camera in Grand Isle. Maybe it can sit there awhile and spin down abit/slow down abit before moving on it?
Maestrobjwa
The hurricane category system is kinda wonky...it's like no difference between 150 & 157 yet it won't be a Category 5...but may as well be with the damage!
Maestrobjwa
Looking at how this thing bombed out...and looking at the comments yesterday about Ida "sputtering" and "not gonna be as crazy as we thought"...I think it's a reminder for all of us: don't underestimate forecastes RI when a storm goes through bath water with few limiting features!
