Intense feeder bands have been training over that general area for hours, and will probably continue doing so for a while. Sames goes for areas getting the eastern eyewall (like Hammond), the flash flooding will ultimately turn into significant river flooding for some areas.

The sudden backbuilding of that band is quite something.

I was a teenager during Katrina, did the levees initially fail in outlying areas before they failed in New Orleans? Is a similar chain of events happening here?

no they failed in the city proper but it did take a good, long time for the word to get out.  It was basically like this until they managed to get a chopper up and then the world could see that the levees had failed.

The storm is moving more and to the NW now...will these bands shift over NO? or will they die out?

I remember being on this very board (it actually might've still been Eastern at that point) and there started being reports of levee failures in some of the more susceptible wards.  This was a pre-Twitter world, but I remember starting to see reports of this on the news late that night.

New advisory has storm down to Cat 1: 95 mph, 960 mb, headed nnw at 9 mph. I don't think I've ever seen a storm initialized with that intensity before, unless it was a glitch....

It was just a position update, not a full advisory where wind speeds are specified in knots, so no reason it couldn't be done, I guess.

The Lafitte situation is gut wrenching. That is the type of report that can indicate a possible mass casualty event--I hope that doesn't occur. And, let's be clear, being trapped in your attic and drowning is not a peaceful way to go. It's one of the most traumatic and painful ways a person can die. When you actually think about what some people are going through *right now* as you read this.. it's tragic. And that situation is occurring in several areas.

I've driven around there many times. Its surrounded by brackish swamp with stretches of  highway elevated on pylons.   Always wondered how/ why they built those interstates. Tough conditions with heat, bugs, humidity...in good conditions.
