Winter isn’t a good time for photos since the strongest cooling effect occurs after spring leaf out. The proximity of the vegetation to the thermometer violates the sitting rules for official temperature measurements. Thanks for responding Bluewave. I posted the picture because it is the most recent picture I have seen. (January 2020) I agree that it is a winter picture which is unfortunate because it is the summer foliage that is the problem. What did you mean "it won't open".

Nothing happens when I clicked on the link that you provided. But you can see how the weather station is hidden under the trees when fully leafed out. No other official weather observing station has this much dense tree cover so close to the thermometer. Prior to the 1990s, the tree growth was much more modest around the site. So the warm season highs weren’t that much different from LGA and EWR. JFK has seen a similar rise in JJA temperatures as the other stations. You can see the big giveaway that the NYC ASOS went from the sun to deep shade. Notice how the average minimum JJA temperature rose in line with the other stations since 1951-1980. But the average high from 1951-1980 to 2011-2020 is virtually unchanged. Everything you said about cities vs rural/suburbs is also true. The fact people travel hours everyday just to get to & from work is insane and very bad for the environment. The new Census data show urban population is growing rapidly in the US while rural pop continues to decline. We are an increasingly urban nation in terms of where people live. Southern and western cities are growing the most, some places with limited water supply as someone pointed out here earlier. But still NYC is now up to 8.8 million and Westchester County passed 1 million for the first time ever, thanks in part to Yonkers, now the 3rd largest city in NYS, passing Rochester Overall population growth is the slowest its been in a long time which isn't a good thing, but its trending much more toward cities. winterwx21
97 degrees here right now. That's the high temp we had yesterday, but it feels slightly better than yesterday. Helps that the dewpoints are a little lower today. Yesterday was horrendous with the heat index up to 110.

I never received a response from the NWS ASOS folks when I responded with the “ I am talking about CPK NYC.” I’m not surprised, silence can be so deafening. They seem to be professional politicians, well adept/versed at kicking the can down the road and weaving a roadmap reply that Rube Goldberg would love. Have a great weekend. As always ….

Don’t feel so bad. This has been a well known issue for a long time. Since the NWS left Rockefeller Center in the early 90s, the quality of the Central Park weather observations has declined. lee59
After this heat wave, looks like the cooler drier air may come in as kind of a whimper. Some thunderstorm activity but not widespread and severe as you might expect from breaking a heat wave.
