I’m a Severe fan of Capitalism, and think ANY HINT of Socialism and Regulation is an Utter disaster, making for a worthless, excuse making, lazy society. Including the Minimum Wage which is asinine that it exists. The Free Market in a civilized society fixes everything on its own with zero regulation. Didn’t realize many on here were fans of socialist “Help” people out by unfairly taking from other people ideals. Most here are middle class or upper middle class liberals in neighborhoods with HOAs and well-funded youth soccer leagues who are just virtue signaling. They don’t want to share their wealth with anyone. They don’t even want to let people from the lower classes live in block housing near them due to “property values.”

Our current house ha a 960 sf footprint but might squeeze out 1500 sf if loft and part of the basement are included, and it's our biggest in 50 years (next week) of marriage. Our daughter/SIL and the 7 kids are in a house only slightly larger - has 1.5 baths and we've never had more than 1 - but they're organized, even helping to make work the 11-people-one-bathroom scenario when they visit. We had 2 trips-of-a-lifetime, in 2016 (Japan, visiting son/DIL) and 2017 (Norway, where my wife's grandparents were born) but that was enabled by her dad's passing in 2014. Other "vacations" tend toward watching the older kids while parents tend to the newest arrival, helping with fix-it projects and light construction, battling the abundant poison ivy, etc. We head home exhausted but joyful and blessed. And thoroughly middle class in my sort-of white collar job - white because it requires a 4-year degree, blue (or wool, perhaps) because it involves time in the puckerbush with the blackflies or at -20. To me, that’s the American dream. Never for want of the necessities. Yet never needing each and every want. Live a happy life with family and friends. Do more than just survive and scrape by.

PhineasC
Another source of debt that goes under the radar usually is wage garnishments for child support, alimony, and legal judgments (IRS, banks, etc.). More people than you probably think have this going on.

Definitely. I feel pretty confident that most here from CT, RI, and MA live in typical suburban environments. All the lawn, garden, and pool talk is pretty typical. bch2014
Agreed that most people on this forum are middle class and upward and many live in suburban environments, but HOAs are actually much less common in New England compared to the balance of the country.

That may be true. They are super common here but perhaps less so up there. Doesn’t change the general concept that much.

I hear it all the time, and it smacks as flimsy ( pun intended..), a veneer in pragmatics and spin evasion. - what follows is nagging anxiety that their sense of community will get denatured (forcibly) and diluted, lose its identity and to a greater extent, their advantages - calling a spade a spade while we are at it. What's really at stake is mashed up form of tribal-elitism. So in that sense, the deeper psyche in the matter is likely more about preservationism of their own habitat. In a lot of ways, humans have territorial instincts - we just play and act on those in vastly complex means compared to other warm blooded whatevers -

As a FTHB, I went straight to condos/townhomes. They don't build small houses anymore because builders can make so much more profit off a large house. I know a few builders....they say there's no money in building small houses and people keep buying the big ones, so why change? Think about it...a lot of the costs are the same....driveway, earthwork, septic, well, permitting....basically all the same costs for big or small.

Personal responsibility is a thing of the past. The tax code needs reform for sure. Hiding assets overseas is a huge problem. Have no problem with billionaires who pay their employees well and pay their fair share. Its the greedy ones who are the problem. I live within my means.
