That was the local Italian place I dishwashed for when I was 15 and 16. Nothing but the cheapest ingredients but people ate there like it was flown in from Italy. There are exceptions. When in UMaine forestry school 1973-75 I worked at a hole0in-the-wall pizza shop in BGR. Owner was Steve Seguino, a 2nd-generation Neapolitan-American from the Italian part of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. (Ironically, he grew up 5 blocks from my fil and the Norwegian section bordered the Italian.) Napoli Pizza made top flight NY-style pizza - when the manager of Pizza Hut wanted good stuff he came to Napoli's. I mostly made Italian sandwiches and ran the register - best Italian rolls I've seen, baked at Ruby Cohen's bakery - he was Sen. Bill Cohen's dad. I think the mushrooms best illustrated Steve's ethos - each week I'd go out to BGR International and pick up 8-9 boxes of fresh PHL-area shrooms delivered thru Delta Air Freight. When Steve sold the place to fulfill his goal of a sit-down Italian restaurant, the new owner would get his mushrooms from the outdated stock at local supermarkets.

WhitinsvilleWX
My company uses contract companies for security, Cafe operations, loading dock, and janitorial. They started requiring the contract people in the building to wear masks yesterday. Regular employees aren't under the requirement. I'm guessing they cant make the weekly covid test for unvaxed contractors mandatory like they can for us, so they made a mask requirement across the board for them. I get the young and healthy are low risk, but like the vaccine, we have no idea the long term Covid affects I certainly am not against the current covid vaccines. They have been a life saver for many. I really think it's all about individual risk level. For people that are at high severe Covid risk, it absolutely makes sense to take the vaccine. We know the people that are at higher risk. Obesity, low physical fitness level, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. The benefits greatly outweigh the risks of the vaccine for these people. But a 25 year old athlete? Someone like that is at such incredibly low risk of seeing severe Covid complications that it might make sense to not want to take any risk at all from the vaccine. That's my opinion. There have also been lots of studies that have shown that healthy diet and exercise greatly reduce the risk of severe Covid. There was a large new study that came out a few weeks ago that showed that a Mediterranean style diet reduced the risk of severe Covid by 40%. And numerous studies have shown that exercise greatly reduces the risk of severe covid. Sports medicine specialist Dr. Robert Sallis did a major study in California that looked at over 48,000 people that got Covid, and compared people that were sedentary to people that got the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week. People that did not exercise were twice as likely to be hospitalized and 2 and half times more likely to die than people that exercised regularly. The study results were incredibly dramatic and showed that physical activity level was the biggest modifiable risk factor for severe Covid, even more than obesity. So I am a big believer in the natural protection of being in great shape. I know it's not 100% protection, and there certainly are cases of people that are in great shape getting severe Covid. But it does lower the risk to such a low level, that it's a level that I can live with without being too worried. I will post a link to an interview that Dr. Sallis did about his exercise/covid study. It's a long read, but a lot of great information... https://www.eatmovethinkpodcast.com/podcast/ep-65-how-to-protect-against-covid And I'm not against getting vaccinated for myself. I'm just waiting for a vaccine that I'm more comfortable with. Novavax has a Covid vaccine that should be coming out this fall. It's an old fashioned protein subunit vaccine, the type of technology that has been used for many childhood vaccines. So we have long term safety data on that type of vaccine, and the other plus is that the side effects in the couple days after the vaccine aren't as severe as well. So I will likely get that when it comes out.

It's boderline criminal, but apparently goes unchallenged in our society. A recent 540,000 covid patient retrospective analysis indicated obesity was the top contributing factor in severe cases. Always fatal and a horrific way to go. The cervid (deer, elk, moose, caribou) version of the prion-caused horror is called Chronic Wasting Disease. It was fist identified in commercial deer farms in the West, IIRC Colorado, but it's spread to wild populations there and has been found as far east as NY, I think. Nasty thing about prions is their hardiness; carcasses/bones of infected deer can transmit prions years after the critter's death. Years ago I saw a pic of a giant pressure-cooker where Wisconsin biologists would cook infected carcasses at high heat. The thing was 5-6 feet across and the locking lugs looked almost 2" thick. So far, I don't think that there's been transmission from cervids to humans. The human equivalent in Jacob-Creuzfeldt (sp?) disease, that destroys the brain from the inside out and is incurable. Yet another reason to continue my strict policy of never, ever stopping in NY/NJ when driving to NH. I would have to be in serious trouble to want to stop there. Grandkids are in SNJ. Have not been there since before the pandemic but hope to do so this fall. Usually involves a stop in NNJ before the final 150 to their home. Oh well.

Typhoon Tip
Reputation and character perception mean something in politics, though. The idea of Gov Baker falling behind Cuomo's mandate mmm that assumption may have just taken a big hit, based upon the day's revelations. Apparently, the D.A. finds enough credible evidence that he's probably losing his nuts-in-public-opinion and being neutered of power here shortly.. He'll get his day in court but ... things aren't looking good for that dude. Not sure Baker will wantonly align behind mandates that were instrumentalized by a narcissist/sociopath fondler - even if exonerated, it's too late. Politics is perception - almost entirely... Our society doesn't provide pathways to redemption.
