That was further South and multi year. It also had the whole improper plowing farm issue. Not saying this doesn’t intensify into something to rival that, but it’s apples  and oranges now and more overhype

Probably especially in this era of deluges.....speaking of which we got barely any rain here today, more bark than bite (bark being thunder and lightning lol).  The part that confuses me is that the radar looked really good for the south shore, so where did all the rain go?

The final high temperature at Gretna, Manitoba was 106°. That easily set a new all-time record high temperature for that location.

Wow, thats the same record maximum as Central Park, which was set in the peak of the dust bowl in 1936.  Does that location have records that go that far back?  I wonder how hot they were back then?

106 at Bismarck a week after they had snow?  How many places in the CONUS have gone from snow to 100 in a week?  I think Denver did that last September?

The next 8 days are averaging 78degs.(68/79), or about +8.0.

GFS has 11 of the next 18 days at 90+.     Little rain showing.      Second HW starts near mid-month.       500mb Heights are averaging 5800m + for the next 15 days.     This should give us July 1 average potential, when the average T is +5 compared to the next 15 days when they are normal.

(was 65* at 1am.) 67*(97%RH) here at 6am, hazy blue......It has begun.    69* by 9am.{RutgersU.=76*}.        74* by 11am{RutgersU. = 83*}.          75* by Noon.      Reached 91* at 6pm.  (I was on beach during PM).         85* by 9pm.

Yeah, we were talking about 100° and snow a few days apart in the Rockies last September. This type of extreme wavelength behavior is becoming more common. So it makes past analogs less effective in our newer climate. This was the warmest June temperature at Bismarck since 6-27-88 when they reached 107°. Newark reached 101° during that record heat at Bismarck. This coming warm up is following a much wetter pattern than June 1988 when Newark only had around 1.00” total for the month. Models have Newark toping out in the low possibly mid 90s next several days before we get backdoored again on Thursday. So a continuation of the up and down pattern for us.

At least being backdoored in June means comfortable temps and a respite to the 90s heat!

I'm researching NYC's 1" rain or precipitation events in Central Park since 1950...they range from a one hour t storm to a five day event...some times it had an inch over two or three days but they were not one event but two or three short ones over a day or two...1" days were days that had some rain in the morning and again later in the day which was counted in...days with a six to 12 hour gap in precipitation were not added in...we just had a two day event the end of May...so far 1983 has 29  1" events and 1965 only five...3 and 4 inch events are on the rise too...I've been working on this for a few weeks now...I have to check the hourly precipitation rates for all the storms that were over an inch...then I have to put it on paper...it gives me something to do with my spare time...

Morning thoughts...

Today will be mostly sunny and hot. Temperatures will likely top out in the upper 80 and lower 90s in much of the region. Daily high temperature records will likely be broken at Newark and LaGuardia Airport and could be challenged at JFK Airport. Likely high temperatures around the region include:

New York City (Central Park): 91°

Newark: 96°

Philadelphia: 93°

Tomorrow will be partly sunny and hot.

The soaking wet foliage in Central Park that is blocking the sensor with the lower morning  sun angle is really obvious. We seldom see the 9am temperature 10° cooler than EWR and LGA. I guess this is to be expected with such poor maintenance of the site.

Wow thanks, I didn't realize Newark had reached 100+ that June.  From what I recall 1988 was more of an inland summer, right?  Where coastal areas never got to triple digits but just inland did?  For the entire summer I dont recall any of our NYC airports or the Park reaching 100.

Also impressive is in that 1988 heat, Bismarck stayed in the 70s at night consecutive nights, that must be rare!  Do you think today could top yesterday there?

How do the temps always seem to exceed the forecasts?  I thought it was "only" supposed to get to 101-103 there.  Is it because of how dry the ground is?

Thanks it would be interesting to see what the quickest is we've gotten 1" of rainfall.  Interesting research!

81 / 67 here and mostly sunny.  Should see low / mid 90s today and finally the first 90s at LGA and NYC.  Heatwave likely Sat - Mon.  Tue should be close but storms and clouds could limit 90s.  Wed should ratchet up more 90s before cold front arries by Thu PM. 6/11 - 6/14 looks cooler and ULL/cut off potential as ridges split with weakness near the EC.  We'll see how long it meanders and where any ULL winds up. Beyond there it looks like any cool down will be another speedbump in an overall warm to hot June.

What a difference a week makes 40 degrees warmer than last Saturday (Memorial weekend(

Central Park is the new Montauk.;)  You know that sensor is under deep vegetation that is very wet. It’s now 10° cooler than LGA and 12° lower than EWR. Even JFK with the sea breeze off of Jamaica Bay is 5° warmer.

Interesting 2010 had its longest stretch of non 90s degree readings (maxes) Jun 7 - Jun 20 for many sites then it didnt go much longer than a few days between 90s the rest of the summer s.

You can see the big Central Park temperature jump from 10 to 11 as the vegetation dried out a bit and the sun angle increased.
