Storms for the most part are looking to miss me to the south. Last Wednesday was the last time it rained here.

Thanks this is more like it!  A lot of my favorite summers are in the high temp list.  2010 is still lapping the field though like Secretariat at the Belmont lol.  I wonder if those 90 and 95 and 100 day numbers from 2010 will ever be exceeded?

 

Look at how 2010 and 1983 are both miles ahead of the rest of the field for 90 degree highs, but 2010 puts some distance between it and 1983 even so.....

 

Do you also have a list of most 95+ and 100+ days for JFK too, Chris?

Had mostly light rain here with some steady rain for a short period. The Majority of rain missed me to the west and east. The storms fell apart before making it to me.

Today will be partly to mostly sunny and warmer. Temperatures will likely reach the upper 70s and lower 80s in most places. Likely high temperatures around the region include:

New York City (Central Park): 81°

Newark: 86°

Philadelphia: 82°

Normals:

New York City: 30-Year: 79.7°; 15-Year: 79.5°

Newark: 30-Year: 81.8°; 15-Year: 81.8°

Philadelphia: 30-Year: 83.2°; 15-Year: 83.4°

A warmer regime could begin to evolve late this week.

Out West, record-breaking heat will continue across the Southwest, including Phoenix. It remains likely that Phoenix will see its earliest 116° or above temperature on record. The unseasonable heat will likely extend northward into southern Canada including Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Phoenix: 115°, 1896 and 1974 (Forecast: 115° to 119°) ***smoke could hold down the readings by 1°-2° from the model values***

Tucson: 110°, 1896 (Forecast: 112° to 116°)

JFK set its record for 95° days back in 2010 at 10. They also tied for most 100° days at 3. The rainfall pattern in JJA 2010 was wet in the West and Central US and dry in the East. So we needed the dry pattern with more westerly flow to set all those heat records.

I don't understand this either.
Why do storms die over Suffolk county, but just south over the cold Atlantic stay strong to severe?

I wonder what the heck happened in 1983 to set all those heat records at the same time as having the wettest year on record lol (it was JFK's wettest year on record too?)

I have sometimes thought about this but don't know if it has any truth. When a thunderstorm approaches a mountain, many times the mountain can weaken the storm and those on the Lee side don't get it so bad. Could New York city's tall skyscrapers have an impact on Long Island when storms come in from the West, in a similar way as a mountain.

I remember a tv weather person, possibly Frank Field, commenting on how a line of storms seemed to split as they approached the city. That was 35+ years ago. I believe the number of 1000’ structures has increased since then. As always …

While it was wet here in 1983, the source region for all the heat just to our west was dry.

wow interesting, all the wet was along the coast.....and to my knowledge there weren't even any tropical cyclones for us that year.

NYC was only 94 in 1972...98 in 1963...1963 had some very cool days in between heat waves...Aug/Sept 63 was on of the coolest on record...

0.31 in the bucket yesterday after a high of 82.  Tremendous stretch of weather the next 4 days, mostly sunny and warm (seasonal).  Saturday depending on storms and clouds brings the next shot of 90.  Heat factory into the Rockies and the southwest deserts producing many records early in the season.  Pieces of that heat will expand east into the the middle of next week.  ECM more adamant with ridging by the middle and end of next week 6/24.

1983 was our highest dew point summer until it was finally surpassed in 2018 and 2019.
