I figured the warmest winter temps, but those outer benchmark storms must make up the difference. Regardless, living on the Cape or Islands gotta suck for snow. I honestly couldn't do it. Not in winter at least.

Seems so.  His sister's post said he past away in the ICU next to his Mom.  So it has to be Covid.  In my orbit of family, friends and friends of friends like James this is the 9th death. Such a sad gut wrenching story.

Yep, it's funny that it feels like the pandemic is over, but James is the third Covid death in my orbit this week. Terribly sad. I wonder if his underlying issues made vaccination a higher risk?

That's awful  I'm sorry Gene.       As far as I know, only my wife's elderly uncle had passed from Covid until James.  I hope that you and yours are well.

As a long-time lurker in this forum, I always enjoyed James' posts and will certainly miss them.  For me, weather is all about hope and experience.  We hope to experience certain types of weather, be it a major storm or a perfect day.  Sometimes the hoping is just as much fun as actually witnessing it, and James truly embodied hope.  I"m glad he got his twister in '19 but I wish he had gotten a few more big storms under his belt before he passed.  I think it's appropriate that we hope for big storms to hit the cape in his memory, although my family on the cape will certainly disagree with me.  Rest in Peace James.

I wonder what the situation was. Was he unable to be vaccinated yet?

I know people who ended up in the ICU or worse but that's because they were anti-vaxx.

Thanks for posting this - very sad yet also heartwarming.  My wife and I are mourning someone only a little older, a young lady who lived with us for 11 months in 2006-07 (turned 18 while here) who then joined the Air Force (earning many commendations, which we learned only from the obit - she never bragged on herself), got married, had a little girl, and then 18 months ago was diagnosed with cancer.  Earlier this month she had part of her colon removed, small enough to avoid the bag but enough to get all the tumor, and we celebrated.  That night blood clots formed in her lungs and she was gone - shockingly - 4 days after turning 33.  She had received Christ as personal Savoir so we know she's with Him now, which is some comfort.  Funeral yesterday with full military honors, including an escort from Logan to Maine, 21-gun salute and looked like her entire platoon attended.  Eyes are wet just typing this.

sorry for your loss.  Sounds like she was a very impressive person.

He was last active here on April 29.  The question is whether he stopped being active here because he was already very sick at that point, or is it some other reason? 

Let's say it's because he was already very sick.  Given the typical timeline of vaccine eligibility for someone his age, it is unlikely that he would've been fully vaccinated by late April.  Odds are he was not vaccinated at all or only had partial protection.

He almost was certainly eligible long before that given his health issues. We don't know what all of those issues were. They could have prevented him from getting vaxxed too.

fwiw in MA the eligibility date  for 16+ (no preconditions) was 4/19

Good point.  I had no clue about his health issues, so that's why I said typical timeline for eligibility for someone that age.

He edited that post before it read, did you guys talk him out of getting a vaccine. You nailed it though. His entire family was hit except his sister who was vaccinated because she works in health care.

I know they opened up the vaccines much earlier for young people with any underlying health conditions that put them at greater risk of severe Covid though, so it's possible he could have gotten vaccinated very early on since he had health problems as ORH_wxman just mentioned. But we don't know for sure what the situation was for him. Very sad news. Obviously a great guy. RIP.

I wasn't that hard to get one well before that either even with zero preconditions. If you just called and put yourself on a no-show list, you would likely get one within a couple days. I got one in early March this way despite not being eligible for traditional appointment.

Glad I had the chance to buy and read his book before he passed. It was an entertaining read. Clearly someone with a creative spirit and passion for weather. RIP.

As a long time lurker on this forum, James was always my go to for Cape winter weather. I do not have a background in science or meteorology but just a weather lover and James was my kindred spirit whenever there was the slightest possibly of a "good" storm on Cape Cod( I live just a few miles from James).. I knew that James was always incredibly optimistic about what would be coming our way but I loved his hopeful weather posts. I will miss him and think of him often this coming winter.

I’m just glad he got winter 2005, 2015 and the 2019 tornado. Lots of optimistic storms and hurricanes that James wouldn’t give up on in between. A James hurricane or winter storm will be fitting in the next year or two for sure!
