The whole drive back from Missouri the temp never got above 51. Yesterday was probably top 10 miserable days for this time of year for the entire region. I retweeted several shots of accumulating snow north of Toronto as well.

More record lows this morning with temps being very similar to yesterday morning. Impressive 2 day run on cold mornings. These last 3 days have been running -10 to -20 below normal putting the smackdown on the monthly avg. Should end up around 1.0 - 1.5 tho after being in the 3 range.

36 degrees this AM, below the forecasted low.  No frost advisory, either, but I see frost on cars and on the ground.  I hope I didn’t just lose my tomatoes and watermelons...

:(

May have lost a tomato plant here but everything else looks good.  I had thought about frost potential but when going to be we were 8 degrees warmer than the same time last night so I thought we’d be ok

Tomatoes seem to be okay but some of the watermelon seedlings show significant leaf damage.  Bummer.

On the other hand, it’s early enough that I’ll just stick a few more seeds in some of the hills.  :)

Watermelon have a hard time with cold. Sometimes it’s hard to get them growing even without frost if it’s relatively cool.

CAD summer

Wouldn't be easy to pull off colder than average over a 3 month period... if we presuppose that the drought will continue.  I should look up the last time Chicago had a cooler than average summer while in a bona fide drought.

Not Chicago, but up here at least 1962 was like that. One of only 8 years that recorded 22 inches or less of precipiation and yet only reached 90 degrees or higher 4 times the entire summer.  This year has actually been pretty similar to 1962 so far, so its an interesting analog to follow as the summer goes along here.

I took a look at Chicago.  I just used years that had less than 10" of precip through May (avg through May is a bit over 13") because setting the threshold less than that would've really cut into the sample size.  The results surprised me... there were some notoriously hot summers in there, but many others were near average or cooler than average.
