The velocity of an asteroid or comet would be greater and that might allow for better predictions. The predictions of the rocket haven’t been great in terms of re-entry and impact.

P.S. Multiple news sources are now saying it crashed.

Yes, spotted over the Arabian Peninsula and crashed over the Indian Ocean near the Maldives?  That thing had nuclear fuel on it didn't it?

Could you imagine if we ever had a giant asteroid or comet come in at a low angle, instead of a perpendicular one, where we didn't know if it would actually crash or just cut through our atmosphere?  A large one just cutting through our atmosphere would cause severe effects but the uncertainty of not knowing whether it would hit land or just barely skim by would be enough to start a panic.- especially if it passed by at a low angle over a large continent.  Chances of that are probably extremely low in our lifetimes, but who really knows.  I think all the large and even moderate sized ones have been mapped though and none are in a position to come near us for the next 100 years at least.

The next 8 days are averaging 59degs.(49/68), or about -3.0.

90 on May 19 is back.      Vacillating by the day, for days.      The problem is the cusp near May 20---otherwise it  is all up for the next 8 days(actually starting on the 11th)

47*(80%RH) here at 6am, m. clear+cirrus.     51* by 9am.      53* by 10am.          59* by 2pm.         54* by  4pm, drizzle.

any idea why this keeps happening in May?  It seems like this has become way more common since about 2010

The range between the high and low temperature at Newark from April 1st is one of the greatest since 2010. It’s part of the very strong blocking and highly amplified MJO activity. Models try to weaken the blocking in 8-10 days with more of.SE Ridge. So that will be our next warm up.

Morning thoughts...

Sunshine will give way to clouds. Showers and a period of rain will arrive during the afternoon or evening hours. Temperatures will likely reach the upper 50s and lower 60s in most of the region. Likely high temperatures around the region include:

New York City (Central Park): 60°

Newark: 62°

Philadelphia: 61°

Tomorrow will be partly sunny and a bit milder. After midweek, a warming trend will commence.

Remember a Trace of Snow here last year       34/48.        It was 80+ in 6 days.         I did not catch a glimpse, but I did at 7:30am in 1977 on  this day, while going to work.       It snowed 4" north of the City.

Remember a Trace of Snow in 1977                 36/44.        It was 80+ in 7days, and 90 in 8 days.

Clouds incoming, what else is new? :fulltilt:

63 and sunny for the time being.

Clouds didn’t last, it was sunny again 20 minutes later and it still is. Today’s much nicer than I was anticipating.

Temp still 63, high of 65 so far.

Danbury and Poughkeepsie reached 36 degrees. White Plains reached 39 degrees this morning.

What about places like Westhampton and Toms River and Marthas Vineyard, Don?  And Mt Pocono or Monticello?  I saw 33-34 at my other house.  Did any of those spots get colder than that?

This April/May period is what we need to monitor to see if this trend of extreme MJO and temperature variability continues.  It's particularly damaging to plants when you have this kind of pattern.

I really hope we can break from the "cooler" temperatures by around the 20th of May. Not sure if I am buying the hot summer idea some are forecasting but maybe more like "steamy" with higher dews and humidity. We'll see.
