In my northern Maine experience the not0infrequent June frosts had no effect on the blackfly populations. Frozen dew atop the Forester this morning though the thermometer only got down to 33. We never set out the warm-wx plants until a few days into June. Median day for lst spring frost is May 24. Bugs are bad right now when the wind calms down and it's warm. Especially the mid-slope elevations right now. Peaks seem bug free, but that upper hardwood forest is pretty ripe for insects. One of my coworkers always coordinated a camping weekend in the White Mtns, Memorial Day Weekend. She invited me, and I declined. They all got snowed on and froze their drunk a$$es off... That was snow was in my top 5 lifetime weather events. Rain flipped to snow around 6pm. Then 3 hours of snow thunderstorms. Not one or two bangs but dozens and dozens. When I checked later it had the look of upslope showers with a northwest flow, which I don’t think we’ve seen here at our site in at least a couple of weeks. It’s still relative mild out there right now, but that flow definitely gives it a bit of an autumnal feel. On a somewhat related note, I see that the BTV NWS has also put out a Frost Advisory here for tonight, so folks in the area might need to cover up if they’ve put any early plants out. If heavier qpf could get up to the high Whites I would think snow level would be quite low. 850mb below freezing even 925mb would be pretty close.
