Wow.  Now I think I'm getting a wee-bit nervous over these winds.  I have a bunch of 70-90 foot trees with relatively small trunks lining my back yard.  With the most recent set of winds sustained at 35 and gusting to 45 twigs and some small branches have already come down as well as a fair number of leaves.  If any one of those trees came down towards the back of my home it would be very damaging.  Plus my wife works from home on the second floor right next to some rear windows and I sit in the family room directly underneath her, also right at the rear edge of the home.  It's pretty scary just watching the huge sway with each gust.  And to think it may get worse over the next few hours and become even more sustained.  I've had a ton of 40mph gusts now.  They were occurring almost every few minutes.  Yup, there goes another gust to 45.  Haven't hit 50 yet.  I had a few in the low 50's with some events earlier this year but nothing that was sustained like this.  One other thing...the temperature has been dropping from an hour ago.  Now back down to 59 whereas it was 64 an hour ago.

I think the GFS was :shocking: wrong.

Well, this event made me bite the bullet and buy a new weather station. I had an Accu-Rite that was pretty good, but the wind sensor never worked right. Today it's showing my my max gust at 18 mph, and even during Sandy only had a gust of 26 mph. I was doubling them to come more in line with other nearby stations, but it's not accurate doing that. But after 10 years, the temp sensor, or I think the fan aspirator had quit working, so my afternoon highs were way off, including a 122 one day last summer when we were actually in the mid 90's. Humidity is backwards too. Reading 99% when it's sunny and 2% when it's raining.

Anyway, here's my new present to me... https://ambientweather.com/amws2000.html

It has good reviews, so I hope it's accurate and reliable.

You picked a fantastic station.  I have the 2902 from Ambient which is the same boom assembly, but with a display not nearly as nice as the led version yours has.  The unit is exceptionally reliable and accurate.  A really great feature of both our units is the ability to calibrate nearly all the parameters if you discover that something seems off.  As far as my temp/humidity those readings have been well within their tolerance of plus or minus 1 degree Celsius.  You'll definitely want to connect the station to Weather Underground (if you aren't already on their network).  Our Ambient units directly send their live data to WU using their rapid-fire data stream of updates every 2.5 seconds.  So as it updates on your local display it simultaneously updates on the WU station map.  Feel free to reach out to me with any other questions you might have.  I know a lot about Ambient products as I think I own 6 different temperature/humidity units along with the full 8 remote sensors that they are all capable of displaying.  I have a sensor in nearly every room in my home along with one outdoors that is not part of my 2902.  I have that sensor in a separate Gill shield right beside the 2902.  You can also calibrate all of those other displays that I have as well.  Just remember, the barometric pressure that first comes up on your display will be your raw (absolute) station pressure.  You definitely want to go into the unit settings and set your local sea-level (relative) pressue for your home.  If you live at 500 feet above sea level then your absolute pressure will read approximately 0.50" lower than your sea-level pressure.  The unit keeps track of both absolute and relative separately.  Be careful not to adjust the absolute pressure...just the relative pressure.  Hope this helps get you started.

Thanks so much for in-depth information. It will be very useful for when the unit arrives. One question, can I set the yearly rainfall total to mach what my old station is showing, or do I need to write it down and add it in at the end of the year for my personal records?

LNS just recorded a gust of 52 but had a period of 44 sustained prior to that, which is mighty impressive.  Don't think that Harrisburg gust of 62 will get topped, as the peak seems to have passed here.  I'd call this a five-club golf wind, or perhaps just unplayable ha.

Are we past the height of the downsloping? God I hope so.

Manheim, 64 mph.

Agreed, unplayable.

I'll send you a pm.  The short answer is not easily, but there is a way if you want to take the time involved.

Cool thanks. Either way is fine with me, but if at the end of year I could have it read correct, it'd be great.

The wind has finally calmed. Gusts only into low 30s now but sustained is closer to 15-20.

Tuesday, we prob get another windy as hell day because it’s all we do here now.

There once was a time when that was a windy day. Now it's just a gentle breeze...lol

I now officially hate these crazy wind events!

I had 2 massive limbs come down from a large Maple tree in my backyard yesterday around 3:30 pm. Fortunately my 2 daughters were not home from school yet and the dog was not outside when it happened. There was no damage to the house and it missed the power lines.

We were able to have a tree service come out and take care of it all this morning.

It could have been much worse, but I will now be fearful of the next wind event!

Crazy and sorry to hear about that.  Yea, the wind events do little to not good.   I guess someone could find a positive such as blowing leaves out of their yard but those leaves are going somewhere.

Geez. Glad no damage and more glad no injuries.

Welcome to my team.

These wind events spread the probable damage out among numerous events. Imagine for a minute 5 straight years of no wind events, then a tropical system slams into us with 60+ gusts. The amount of damage at one time would be incredible
