I was up to 300 feet of fuse at one point - 2 rolls of red, 1 roll of green. I got a kit to make estes type rocket engines, and used to tape them to a stick and plug the upper end with some loose powder on top of the compressed fuel = large bottle rockets. One of my fantasy careers was being an astronaut, but I was too tall to be a pilot, not that I would have necessarily accomplished that. OMG the summer before my senior year in college (summer of '82) I was a new student's counselor doing sessions from the end of June until the beginning of August, and one of the other counselors had one of those - I think even the same color (with bench seats in front and back and it was naturally a stick). On July 4th that summer, we had off that weekend, so 9 of us jammed in one of those - 3 in the front (including the driver) and 6 in the back with 3 lap-sitters), driving from Amherst, MA to Provincetown, MA, which is right on the tip of the Cape Cod hook (it was around a 90 mile trip each way). What a blast! The car owner/counselor's parents had a beach house on the bay side of the Cape in Brewster where we stayed for a couple nights (in the attic). On the way back, one of the other counselors who had met up with us there, had his own car, so we were able offload 2 for the trip back, only having 7. It is shocking how small the Beetles look on the outside but they were actually roomy inside (I guess if you're young ). Hope your dad had a happy birthday! I think he's happy w/people around and feeling ok for his age. He has his garden as well. Unlike me, he hates the winter. Probably because his bones start creaking. We first started hearing them in the woods about 5 years ago (in the afternoon), and at first we thought they were birds calling back and forth, but we'd never see them. Never paid much attention before, but they were around over in Englishtown/Manalapan NJ too when I visited last Saturday. Must be the high Dewpoints this summer.
