dark orange returns are sleet—bring on the heavy sleet!

eta:  nope, just big icy snowflakes against the windows.

Sometimes those big aggregates can get a thin layer of meltwater percolating on the outside, which makes them very reflective on radar. Wetbulbing on the outside of the aggregate can also cause them to survive longer, thus making it through a warm layer that would melt smaller aggregates or individual crystals (which end up a sleet or fzra on the ground).

Same here. Do we think the heavier returns just to the west will flip it back or is it over?

Heaviest returns temporarily cool the column enough for all snow but that sleet is being stubborn as all hell with south winds aloft. Currently dumping a mainly snow (85/15) snow/sleet mix. 30 degrees. 3.5”

Wow, impressive! Must look like deep winter out there. You guys have been on a heater ever since Jan 31st. Like your own personal ending to 14'-'15 up there (minus the arctic cold :p).

Not sure how much we got in McLean before an icy/rainy mix took it away, but I'll check with spotter reports later. 32F right now.
