I think this IS as good an outcome as possible for freezing rain. It’s 27 and dark and that’s a big difference between 29/30 this afternoon mid Feb. Could mid Jan have squeaked out another 1-1.5F colder?

 Sure not the wholesale outages pre Pepco trimming days. It’s still a dangerous event though.

All that ice made it “white “ at night as it was pitch black all lights and power out.

vey very quiet except for the awful splintering sound of huge tree limbs. Never heard such a painful to hear shredding and cracking sound. Like something living was being torn apart....because....it was.

 

That was the sound heard here in Oct 9/10 1979 when 4-10 inches of heavy wet snow fell on still leafed out (but turning) trees. Just the continuous pop, pow, snap, bam from trees breaking.

Wow. It snowed in Beltsville that night and earliest on record for me. The sound sticks with you.

That's it! That's a jebslide! That's a very good term for an Ice jebwalk lol! 

I did a LOT of jebsliding in 1994! It wasnt just ice walking, I did a lot of literal sliding, too! Many times, that was the only way to get downhill!

Looks like the melt starts today. Flooding rain and big mud on the way for this second week of this epic 2 week period. Amazing to see TX and LA having a better winter then the DC area lol.

Some guidance would suggest LWX will need to hoist advisories for ice tomorrow esp N and W. CAD seemingly always takes longer to erode. Something both the HRRR and NAM are showing this morning. Torching just off the ground but that shallow cold hanging on.

Bring the mild and rain. With the trough well west and the HL block breaking down, there is really no chance of snow for the lowlands this week. Models like to depict crippling ice storms at range in these setups, but like I said the other day, it almost never happens over here. Thankfully.

I had to look it up in my notes, but we had 2 inches of sleet out here on 11/15/18.  It was crazy.
