Since there was no internet, we interacted by cruising through town. Uptown and then downtown and do it over and over again and again. Businesses allowed you to park in their parking lots after they closed and crowds of people would gather and socialize in different parking lots and watch as others cruise by. People took pride in their rides—washed and waxed and lots of hot rods. Gas was like $0.35 for low test and $0.38 high test. It was a cardboard tube with one end painted with radium "undark" paint and had a small aspheric lens on the other side. At night, looking through the lens one could see all the scintillation activity which was essentially alpha particles striking the zinc sulfide scintillating agent. Looked like lightning in a bottle. And to my disappointment holding this little miracle near an AM radio yielded no "sferic" noise. Little did I know such a disc was quite dangerous and easily clocking 50+ mrem/hr gamma!
