Thanks for your efforts, I usually go by your measurements as a rough guide to over here in Colonia, but this time I measured and it was 14.5 back around 3 pm; my gut tells me by eyeballing it we have more than 16 otg but I'm not going out tonight again to measure. Will check in the morning. Great storm that didn't quite measure up due to hours being lost to sleet ( as per usual ) but still the biggest event hands down in years. SnoSki14 Posted February 2, 2021 Share Posted February 2, 2021 Well today was a wild ride. I have about 18" and it's still snowing lightly. If it didn't sleet we would have easily exceeded 2 feet. I see the HRRR/Nam and other models giving us a general 2-4 tonight through tomorrow so that could put us over 20" when all is said and done. Congrats to those who broke the 2' barrier. This was a storm when we might have recorded close to 20" by wiping a board every 6 hours. I wiped at midnight Sunday and at midnight Monday. Total as of 7:30 PM was 14.6". An additional 1.7" of snow and sleet accumulated on cleared surfaces between 7:30PM and midnight but the depth on the snowboard only increased by 0.3" and I recorded the 14.9" total. Since this was a long duration storm, wiping once per 24 hours was appropriate rather than waiting to the end. I use midnight for snow totals; most Cocorahs types use around 9AM but it can vary. Of course I measure more frequently than once per day...hopefully no Central Park-type measurement hijinx here. I know a lot of people still wipe the board (or picnic table or deck) more frequently. I am not philosophically opposed to wiping the snow board more frequently, but I am doing it the way we are currently supposed to. I do believe that it would be more appropriate to wipe the board at a phase change, which is also not currently part of the protocol. So if someone wants to say we got 16", I won't argue it, but 15" goes in the books (plus any bonus...). Splits were 1.3" on January 31 and 13.6" on February 1. Temperature went above freezing in the past 30 minutes (~1am 2/2). Currently 32 with the barest hint of drizzle. Peak gust here was 53 mph a little bit after 7 pm. I spot checked calendar day records via XMACIS for NYC CP, Allentown, and Sussex NJ. If there need to be corrections, please let me know. NYC CP for 2/1/21 14.8" not only[ a daily record, but ranked #10 highest. POR back to 1869. Allentown for 2/1/21 22.4" not only a daily record but ranks top 2 or 3 depending on your data interpretation,-basically behind January 23ish, 2016 and ahead of January 9, 1996. Their 2 day is 26.9, ditto again #2 or 3 depending on your interp. POR back to 1912. Sussex NJ 2 day (used my 25.0) but thats unofficial and subject to downgrade. Compaction is keeping pace with additional accumulation especially since last evening and over night snow was of more dense nature which is enhancing compaction of the fluff underneath. Yup my total ground is 22 , no doubt I had many more inches as what I shoveled after it was cleared was at least 6 more inches . Aren’t we supppose to report what’s on the ground ? My brother in law lives in Hamburg and says he got 30 because he saw Newton’s report . I bet him 1000 dollars he doesn’t have 30 on the ground .
