I was wondering why I've been stuck between bands most of the day. It's like there's been a hole over the SE side of Grand Rapids. Some could be due to being close to the radar source, but I can confirm the GRR hole is at least partially real as accumulations have been pretty nonexistent so far IMBY. Not sure I've ever seen it, but it's similar to when we have a connection to another Great Lake (Superior-to-Michigan, Huron-to-Erie/Ontario, etc). Plus “Two foot drifts walking down to the river by neighbors driveway” Actually his plow guy decided now was a cool time to take a vacation in Florida (???) so he’s scrambling to find another plow company. frostfern Posted February 6, 2021 Share Posted February 6, 2021 Really dumping here at times. It snowed about an inch in 20 minutes when I was in the store. It isn't persistently that heavy, but really difficult driving in the most intense bursts. It cranks for 20 minutes, then lets off for a bit, then cranks again. slow poke Posted February 6, 2021 Share Posted February 6, 2021 Petoskey and Harbor Springs area were near white out today while I was there, easily had the most fresh snow I saw from my drive from Higgins to there and back today. Drove through some really intense bands. Gaylord area and south was much better for the drive back with much lighter snow falling. josh_4184 Posted February 6, 2021 Author Share Posted February 6, 2021 Picked up about 7" of synoptic Thursday night, only light LES throughout the day, strongest banding was towards my NW as I anticipated with the WSW/W flow earlier targeting Petoskey area towards Boyne down to Ellsworth. Now flow has switch to more of a WNW flow and been getting hit heavy the past hour or so, depending on how long it takes for the dry air to move in will depend on how much can pick up. GRR reporting over 2" more than what I've measured in my driveway. It's fickle though. Lake effect zone is probably highly variable with more fine-scale streaks than the map shows. Most of it has been falling in localized heavy showers under very narrow bands. Very fluffy with a lot of drifting too. I added up 6" from the synoptic event, then another 4 of lake effect so far. Most of that happened in a 3 hour period when a couple heavier convergence bands passed over between 4pm and 7pm last night. Had a complete whiteout that dropped an inch in 20 minutes around 6:00pm (worst timing with rush hour traffic), but most of the time it has been flurries or very light snow. While I criticised the Chicago futility talk because it was so premature in my opinion, I have to admit I was really unsure what the season total would bring to Grand Rapids because of their insane deficit built up into mid January. Glad you guys are finally on a nice run. I personally did not hear thunder (it was reported by others) however I was in it and I can tell you it's some of the craziest conditions I've ever driven in, and I obviously have been in many much bigger snowstorms. Yea. The initial burst of snow Thursday night reminded me of a spring snowstorm out west, like in the mountains of New Mexico or Arizona. There was graupel mixed in with the flakes at times.
