CoastalWx
I think people expect 8-12" events to grow on trees after the last decade, but in reality they don't have a return rate that is frequent if you look at climo. When I look at that, I consider 8-12 (especially 12") to be a major event.

TheSnowman
Anything where 12” - 15” are the top amount is Moderate. 15”-24” is Major. 24”+ amounts all over is Historic. I thought that was all like, in stone. Sure is in my mind. And 8”-12” I Barely want to call Moderate. 1

40/70 Benchmark
Jesus, you call 10" of snow moderate, and some of these spazes act like you kicked their mother in the stomach. When a snowfall ranks out of the top 100-200 of your life, its modertate. Sorry...you'll live and be better for it- 1

NorEastermass128
1-4” = light 4-8” = significant 8-14” = substantial 14-24” = major 24-36” = historic 36”+ = biblical *Adjust for snow density when appropriate. For example, 3” of pasty snow has a higher societal impact than 5” of 30:1 powder. ***Since “moderate” is apparently a trigger for some, I threw it out entirely! 1

Bostonseminole
I'm with Ray, 8-12 is moderate for this storm.. but allot depends on other factors like 8-12" in 1 hr would be epic.. 8-12 in 3 days not so much.. any winds? how heavy is this stuff? I mean if we had 8-12 of paste with 50 mph winds it would not be moderate to me.

J Paul Gordon
In an urban area, like the hilly city of Worcester, 8-12 is a major event. Not hysteric. Not minor. But a very good hit. It has to do with being in a city. If Paxton gets 8-12 it is significant but not a real big deal. I'll be delighted to see 12" of the light fluffy stuff. Snowcrazed71
I know we have talked about snow ratios. Everyrhing modeled uses a 10:1 ratio. With the temps logged in the 20s for most, wouldnt the snow ratios be a bit higher? Ps... I am mot expecting anything good on the GFS. Just my thoughts on that

Yes, we have had a boon in storms but measuring technique has changed, for many newbies, which as everybody knows I despise. There are much more weather spotters, better computer models 24/7, and of course the news which tends to sensationalize what were mostly moderate storms of the past. Moderate meaning old definition: 4-8",5-10", and even 6-12" storms. We had discussion on this board quite a while back.
