I know some of you guys were talking about home weather stations over the summer.  Seems like we had some people that had ambient weather stations and then other people taking the plunge on the newer technology with the new Tempest weather station by weatherflow.  Any updates on the performance?  I'd really like to get something set up in my yard before Winter really sets in.  I always wanted a Davis but those things just seem so wildly antiquated at this point, they really havent evolved with the times.  I'm actually leaning towards the new Tempest design but a little skeptical because it hasnt been around long, it's also about twice the price of the ambient.

I'll give a quick review on the Tempest. Had it about 2 months now...

  • Ease of install - 9/10
    • Quick if you install mount on a 1" PVC from the ground - I install on the roof, so that took more effort.
  • Ease of use - 8/10
    • Nice app, a little buggy, but mostly fine (1 update/month so far)
    • Nice notification bar (on Android - would like a widget or something though)
  • Reliability (hardware) - 7/10
    • My wind sensor ended up being faulty so WeatherFlow sent a new unit.
    • This was a bummer as I lost all my data from the other device (not sure if it could have been salvaged).
  • Service - 9/10
    • WeatherFlow was great, responsive (especially with the return).
    • They can perform remote diagnostics.
    • 2 year standard warranty, 10 year extended.
  • Accuracy - 9/10
    • All the readings seemed quite accurate to me, not sure how the rain sensor will work with snow, we'll see.
  • Custom forecasting - 8/10
    • After a few weeks of readings, it seemed to begin fine-tuning the local forecast - some days temp data was more accurate than NWS in our microclimate.
  • Data customization - TBD
    • Haven't had a chance to upload data to excel or something.
  • Integration - 8/10
    • Works with IFTTT, Alexa, Google, etc.

I'm not sure how frequent any hardware failures are (or will be), but I'd recommend the Tempest as it's quite unique, works well, and is the next-gen of weather stations.

This is great. I'm also in market for new station.

I went ahead and bought and installed the Tempest this past weekend.  It's definitely a cool little unit.  I can already tell the rain gauge will have some issues though.  Seems like the weakest link by far from reading what other users have experienced and what I've already seen in regards to its susceptibility to vibrations.  I'll probably just end up running old school analog rain gauges anyway; so that measurement can just be tossed out.  The rest of the sensor suite is pretty cool (and seems very accurate) and the phone app has a really nice layout.  I also agree the online support forums and customer support seems really good.

Once the weather turns crappy (and I'm stuck inside for 6 months) I'm going to spend some time working on exporting the data so that I won't lose it if the weather station itself fails (as you experienced).  Seems like a lot of options exist to put the data into an API.

I've never had a real weather station in my backyard (just little cheapy ones) but I already feel like this will be addicting, haha.  I'm already planning to run another weather station along side this one so I can cross calibrate and really assess performance.  Looks like I've found another thing to throw money at....lol.

My issue with our current climate is that it just seems soooooo easy anymore to break these record highs. It's not like, "Ohhhh...we just barely made it." It's like day after day...or a whole month of records. It's ridiculous.

It really is frightening to see how quickly we're breaking record highs. The ratio of record highs vs record lows broken has to be like 95/5%

Warmest July/November on record in same year?

1 47.9 1931

2020 - 51.8 Through 11/8

It only makes sense with the large (slightly questionable) anomalies for the summer months that record is in play. I think my negative outlook is based solely on the temperature extremes that are on the positive (warmth) anomalies vs the negative (cold) anomalies we have witnessed for years now. I don’t see that changing this winter either. We will have shots of cold but I think the warm wind out more often
