Holston_River_Rambler
Starting to get some wet snow mixing in here. I can look up to a nearby mountain and see the snow line at around 1800 feet.
Holston_River_Rambler
Now the next great question for today. Do we see the sun before nightfall? I'm pessimistic about my chances:
BlunderStorm
About 15 minutes ago flakes started to mix in. Now all snow. Nice to see but I can only dream of what would have been had it been 10 degrees colder.
John1122
Had a switch over this morning that didn't amount to anything on the ground really. Not checked above 3000 feet. There was no accumulation at 2500 though it could have melted off.
John1122
It would he hard to complain about the start of winter imby. The first two weeks I've gotten 3 inches of snow. Two other days have seen snow falling and there's ice/snow in my forecast in the next 48 hours. The question becomes is this a one off like the last couple of years where winter peaked in December then went away, or is it a 95-96/09-10/10-11 where winter started early in December and just kept coming back until mid February? I'll say for here, the December events of the last two years were basically one offs that led into abrupt pattern shifts to unrelenting warmth. This has been multiple wintry events and the pattern looks very favorable again in another week or so after this.
John1122
Looks like a decent amount of snow above 2800 feet or so. The entire top several hundred feet of Cross mountain is nicely white.
Holston_River_Rambler
Same over here on Frozen Head. Tried to get a pic but the clouds only cleared out for a little while. Hopefully I can get one tomorrow.

Holston_River_Rambler
I would have liked to have seen where the OP went after 240: N. stream swinging a trough through, followed by a Yukon HP, almost dropping down in sync with the s/w left behind in the SW. Looks like a cross polar flow too. And the N. Stream wave could act as a 50/50

Holston_River_Rambler
And just like that, as soon as the set has set for an hour, cleared overhead with the a little bit of the Milky Way visible.
Holston_River_Rambler
Just found a cool app that lets me take star pictures with my phone. Hopefully I will get better using it in time. Orion over MoCo:
weathertree4u
Most all of the seven day forecast for the Nashville area is below averages, at least for hi temps, for January, very strange.

nrgjeff
Nice @Holston_River_Rambler I never get tired of the winter sky. So many stars and nebulae. All remember Jupiter and Saturn conjunction is Monday. They will be close from now until a few days after. Lit!
Holston_River_Rambler
I may have to drive out to see the conjunction. My horizon in that direction is a little too high to see it. @nrgjeff I'm so happy with the night skies where I live now. Def will be getting more astronomy equipment when I get the $$.

Holston_River_Rambler
Snow level with the last gasp band over E TN now is at around 900 feet above the radar beam, which is at about 1100 feet in Morristown. So around 2000 feet and falling. Cameras and reports from NC High country say it is rippin' over there. Maybe Bays Mt. and other areas around that elevation can get in a few flakes before it ends:
John1122
Changed over to light snow at the house. As I drove to town it was mixed below about 1500 feet.

John1122
It's a raw, cold, snow shower and snow flurry kind of day. Flakes are coming down lightly now. These kind of days have been rare the last few years.
