Testing = cases, not hearing overwhelmed. Here's an example: https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-connecticut-utah-south-dakota-birthdays-9af5eefc37765c777c215d9560c66d2b Quote The impact is being felt in every section of the country — a lockdown starting Friday at the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s reservation in South Dakota, a plea by a Florida health official for a halt to children’s birthday parties, dire warnings from Utah’s governor, and an increasingly desperate situation at a hospital in northern Idaho, which is running out of space for patients and considering airlifts to Seattle or Portland, Oregon. “We’ve essentially shut down an entire floor of our hospital. We’ve had to double rooms. We’ve bought more hospital beds,” said Dr. Robert Scoggins, a pulmonologist at the Kootenai Health hospital in Coeur d’Alene. “Our hospital is not built for a pandemic.” In the southern Idaho city of Twin Falls, St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center said it would no longer accept children because it is overwhelmed with coronavirus patients. Except for newborns, all under age 18 will be sent 128 miles (206 kilometers) away in Boise. Among those in northern Idaho joining Scoggins at a meeting of Idaho’s Panhandle Health District was board member Walk Kirby. “People are dying, they’re going to keep dying and catching this stuff,” Kirby said. “How many people won’t wear a mask? The same people that won’t get vaccinated for it.” Utah’s Gov. Gary Herbert proclaimed Friday to be “a record day for Utah — but not a good one” as COVID-19 cases reached an all-time high for the state. “Up until now, our hospitals have been able to provide good care to all COVID and non-COVID patients who need it,” he said. “But today we stand on the brink. If Utahans do not take serious steps to limit group gatherings and wear masks, our healthcare providers will not have the ability to provide quality care for everyone who needs it.”

Meanwhile the Norway maples are just changing colors this week. It has been an absolutely epic foliage season around here this year! Long and strong. HoarfrostHubb
Going to be a rough month or two. So far in Mass deaths and hospitalizations have not gone up very much even as positive cases are racing upwards. My brother is livid that hockey rinks are temporarily closing for two weeks due to Covid clusters linked to them. I feel bad for his kids. Of course my own daughter has not been able to take part in her favorite activities since March...
tamarack
Reading all those grim reports in klw's post makes me wonder if NNE has the same disease. Maine's active cases have run around 600 in recent days, with hospitalizations ~10 and ICU patients 1-3. Count your blessings...

NNE is basically the one region of the US which is mostly escaped so far. Makes me worried about ski season up there. Not the skiing itself of course, but people traveling etc.Obviously its an important part of their economy.
Ginx snewx
If we treated Europe's population like states with similar population in UK Germany France Spin combined we would be having 160K cases a day. Covid is running crazy no matter the country or state of lockdown. UGH Back in protect mode for me. 2 back surgeries next month for me. Hopefully not in the middle of a Covid hospital crisis as hospitalized numbers are still very low here Pandemic doing what pandemics do. 1
tunafish
Tourism didn't miss a beat in NNE this summer. In fact it felt busier in the PWM area than past years. The major outbreaks in Maine have been linked to Churches and a wedding, both where people were indoors and unmasked. I haven't heard of any outbreaks related to out of staters. tunafish
Nothing wrong with questioning studies, or wanting to understand methodologies. But to me that graph is just common sense at this point, regardless of validity.

Seems like this is now becoming widespread across the board. Not just one really hard hit region like in the Spring. We can divert resources to help one or two or three hard hit regions. But if we go haywire across the board, tough decisions will have to be made. Next 8 weeks will be huge.

PhineasC
Pretty funny how the COVID stat-anxiety and doom-porn hysteria hits a new fever-pitch just in time for the final days of the election. I'm sure it will just a be a coincidence when the "second wave" and "overwhelmed hospitals" issues suddenly fade away after election night. What an amazing virus, so in tune with the times! 1

The >80k cases yesterday are fake? I do think once Biden wins, some Republicans will start shouting from the roof tops about how bad it is out there and how Biden isn’t doing enough. I personally think if Biden wins you won't hear much about case counts after that point. But sure, maybe the media will keep banging the same drum they have been banging since March. Maybe they will get even louder as the second wave hits. Anything is possible, I guess. Just a "conspiracy theory" I have. I'm sure this crisis would never be used for political ends and we can trust everything we are being told. Sure.

You are entitled to your opinion. I think we will be able to judge for sure if this is a "horseshit conspiracy theory" by mid-January. Under your narrative, the media should be absolutely tearing into President Biden by that time. "Blood on his hands" and all that. I think we will see a major decline in COVID media coverage by mid-November depending on who wins. We will see. BTW, my statement has nothing to do with the actual virus. I am referring to the coverage and propaganda being beamed into everyone's homes. The virus is not a hoax, I am not arguing that.

Chicago is masked up and covid is exploding, but nobody knows their neighbors so it's cool. 1 minute ago, Ginx snewx said: 84% of people in Spain wear masks yet.. Meanwhile deaths are nowhere close, not in the same stratosphere as the spring. So either a) the virus has weakened b) the treatments have improved c) vitamin d helps a lot d) the weakest are already dead e) way, way more people had it in the spring than they knew about f) all of the above Regardless, deaths don't lie. It ain't what it used to be, a fact we should celebrate not deny.

You know that even if he were to win (I have doubts) Jan 20 is inauguration. Not sure how much impact he can have before then. The media has been pretty constant with reporting every day. Numbers of cases (lots more testing) climbing. Would not be prudent to ignore. I do wish there were more science based reporting on treatments and therapies Some of those have been very positive

HoarfrostHubb
One thing we all know is that they are testing many more asymptotic people. Back in April only the very sick were really being tested. So there is that 70% of Mass positives in the last month have been people under age 50
