CoastalWx
Starting to drop now. 69. Will smoke cause issues with radiating?
CoastalWx
Got my answer. Apparently it won’t affect outgoing long wave radiation, but will have an effect on incoming shortwave radiation, which is what we have during the day. 2

Even really high cirrus seems to effect that outgoing radiation.

I guess particle size has to do with it. That’s what the experts say anyways. Can’t say I’m familiar with smoke forecasting lol.

My wife manages the spa and tennis centers there. Nice property. 57/40 at MVL. Clear skies. I like a low of 36-37F with dense fog here. Fog will save us a frost but just above the fog layer will frost, maybe 900-1000ft. What's it pay? Lol

I don't need the cold yet lol. Foliage starting to look good in spots though. Taken today 5

If you have reduced incoming shortwave rad and little effect on outgoing longwave rad how is there no sfc cooling? http://climate.envsci.rutgers.edu/pdf/RobockForestFire91JD02043.pdf 1

If it limits warmth during the day and doesn’t affect cooling at night, that’s definitely a net cooling effect.

So overall it may be a slight warming effect while keeping surface inverted with cooler than expected temps.

Poor Wizzy and his lapse rates. 1

Poor Wizzy and his lapse rates. Yeah radiative budget was positive, but that was more because of warming in upper levels. Opposite effect from volcanoes. https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2019GL082360

powderfreak
41/39 and dead calm. It is straight cold out here taking the dog for her night walk. 49F with a breeze up at 1500ft. There‘a the difference between mixed mid-slope and calm valley bottom. Radiators mount up.

powderfreak
The local temp differences are wild on these nights. Dropping into the upper 30s and calm in the lowest elevations while literally a few hundred feet up is still mid-40s. You can actually see MVL runway in this upper left on RT 100, the ASOS usually runs pretty close to that nearest PWS.
Spanks45
Down to 52 here already...I was hoping to keep the pool open for another week or 2, but it doesn't look very warm moving forward. The kids were only in for 20 minutes today, a good sign that things are getting a bit too chilly for swimming. The temp was still 74 this afternoon... Looks like Alex is 37F too. We are at 39F and the drop has really slowed down. I’m thinking 36-37F locally. We may mist/fog soon. SLK in the Adirondacks down to 32/28 already at 11pm. That’s crazy. Like frozen bird bath in the morning cold there.
