NNE Warm Season Thread 2020

It's about May 1rst.  Time for a Warm NNE thread.

Grass is turning green and the first forsythia is turning yellow in our area.  I'll start out the thread with a picture of a bluebird which I just took outside.  We put out bird houses a few years ago and the opening size  seem perfect for them.  Each year they have chicks and the bluebird population is increasing on our property.  I had never seen one when we lived in the Boston area.

I'd appreciate the NNE warm season thread more if it would actually get warm! :D

May isn’t typically a very warm month around here though, and the flora kind of support that in the way that the leaves aren’t fully out until we get to about June.  We’re lucky in NNE in that we’ve got the latitude and elevations to pretty much keep the snow around until it actually gets warm.  Aside from mud season, which depends on one’s immediate location, we get to skip over those March and April type periods in SNE that so many people seem to hate.  I guess May here could be somewhat like April in SNE though.

Mild 44F here... picnic tables have been rotting at 32-33F all day though.  Wind chills in the mid-teens.  Should be a nice day for a little hike with the dog lol.

I went out for a bit earlier.  Down in the valley at 800' it was a typical gloomy day but nothing real awful, just up the hill at 1250' at my house tough it is windy with mist on and off.

Beautiful May 5th morning.   37F gusty wind and mostly cloudy.  Reminds me of the first real fall cold fronts with quick blowing Cu coming down from the NW.  I see Alex and Franconia Notch got some snow earlier.

Late week looks interesting.   Snow for some?   Forest canopy still bare here but ready to open.  Going to be a late leafout in this pattern.   Such is life in NNE

anyone driven thru franconia notch and taken a look at snow coverage at cannon? I'm thinking that I may go up there Saturday in the snow - and ski down from summit - if there is good coverage and a few other things fall into place.

Did you ever make it to the notch?  You were thinking of going today.  It's 2pm.  Top of Cannon is 17F with snow.  Winds whipping through the notch into the 50's and 60's

Nope. My son went up to move some furniture so I stayed home. I saw some video this am on Twitter, happy I didn't attempt. Temps - no biggie, those winds miserable.

More snow last night in NNE.  Avoided it here

41.6F sunny and windy.  Another Mid May day.  I see the end of the tunnel however

Hard to believe this is the scene in the Green Mountains on May 12th...

The Western Slopes got crushed...certainly more over there than on the East side.  Nice day for a weenie drive.

With the arrival of sustained 70-80F temps in the valleys and 50-60F+ at the summit, we are finally on our final descent at the Mansfield Stake.

I hiked up there today to get a reading to pass along to the NWS, lots of water pouring out of the higher elevations as they release that high SWE.

Posted this in the May thread but good info for this thread too as it moves at a slower pace.

With the snow melting fast, I'm trying to get up there every 48 hours or so now for stake readings.

It's a walk for sure, 3.5 miles each way with 2,600 vertical foot gain just to get a snow depth reading... but who am I kidding, the dog and I love it.

I called it 30" today on my report to WFO BTV.  It gets hard this time of year with the melt ring to narrow in on a certain inch.

Its in free-fall now... lost 11" in the past 48 hours alone.  The summit isn't cooling off at night like the valleys.  The valleys are getting down to frost levels in the low to mid 30s at night but the summit has now been 48 hours in the 50F to 70F range.  Not good for snow preservation when you don't drop below 50F, ha.

Stunning weather though to wander around in the mountains.  Not a cloud in the sky for like the 5th or 6th day in a row, ha.

Looks like SDDs at the stake will finish pretty close to the average.  Here SDDs were 20% below avg, makes up a bit for 18-19 which had 91% AN.

Leaf out here is near 100% on aspen, 80% on beech-birch-maple, 20% or less on oak and ash.  Typical species sequence and probably near the average dates thanks to huge catch-up wx.
