Mosquitos are the state bird of Maine.

Once, and only once, my kids decided that they needed to get out of the car for a bathroom break in the woods somewhere on Rt 9 in Maine after Bangor on our way to St. John. Those mosquitos were big!

You get the black flies now, then the mosquitos, followed by the horse and deer flies in the summer heat.

I don’t notice an issue with deer and horse flies up here.  It’s really nice to walk and hike in mid summer without those things around.  Must be climate or something but they aren’t a problem.

Meanwhile, down in Woodstock, CT those things are absolutely brutal.  Can’t walk 5 mins on the dirt roads without having half a dozen of the things buzzing around your head and trying to bite you through your shirt.

Oh you have no idea living out there.  Wait for a warm humid July evening and turn your flood lights on.  The size and volume of the insects bouncing in that light will be astonishing.  Especially with that field out in front... and bright light will bring every insect from a mile away to it.  Moths the size of your fist will feed on those insects.

Omg! I’ve seen enormous moths up at Maine house.  They were like the size of a hand.

Could be a habitat thing. They’re pretty prevalent where we are, especially the deer flies. We’re in a wooded neighborhood with wetlands, a  stream, and close to a pond.

I was not prepared for the size of the mosquitoes or the anger of the large local hornets. LOL

Definitely some jumbos out today. Also saw some smaller ones flying escort duty. Also some huge flying ants. It’s like prehistoric up here compared to MD.

Whole different world up here, You will get the full NNE experience in your locale.

I am in love so far. We are seriously considering a major life change and just making this our main residence.  The vibe up here is incredible. Everyone is so chill and friendly.

Much slower pace and lifestyle, You won't regret it if that's what you choose.

That’s next to explore for sure. Looks like a trailhead for Adams and Madison are right across the road from us.

Yeah, that’s a major access point to the Presidential Range.  I’ve never been over there but there’s limitless opportunities.

Very neat to watch the green march up the mountain. Really exploded over the last 3 days. The contrast with the snow is cool too. Is it weird to be sad to see it melting day by day? LOL

This time of year is almost as amazing as fall for foliage. There always comes a point where I think that I never realized there were so many shades green.

Haven't seen many deer flies here either although we had a ton of them growing up in S NH. The mosquitoes are coming out now and the black flies were only a 7/10 tonight compared to 10/10 the past week.

Not many bats left around here after white nosed syndrome did a number on them.

I still have plenty at work in the mill....lol, Probably why the pest have become more prevalent in some areas, You can see them feeding at dusk on the insects up here.

I am in at 65, pretty much used to cold water from growing up at the beach. As long as it's not windy the sun is warm enough
