The hospitals on red alert have been on red alert for a few weeks, my guess is from Covid patients taking up monitored beds. If you go on the website you can query alert history. Pretty common, hospitals like beds full, so pre-covid, on a normal day, more hospitals would have been under some sort of alert at some point during the day. For instance, Shore Regional on the eastern shore was on red alert quite often in February. Since quarantine/stay at home started there have been almost no alerts. It is pretty common during Cold/Flu season in Central MD to see the hospitals on yellow, red, reroute. Since Covid-19 it has been rare to see the hospitals on these alerts as people are avoiding the hospital for minor stuff (like they should all year!). As others have said, that will definitely spike the cases and that shouldn't alarm folks. This will allow public health to isolate infected individuals. For transitioning from phases to phase of re-opening we will be looking closely at supply chain integrity of PPE, ICU bed counts, hotspots in places like nursing homes, and number of vents being used.
