Winds aren’t letting up anymore like they were earlier, it’s more constant, feeling a bit Sandy-ish, obviously not the height of Sandy, but how it felt in the hours prior.

Yea, has that sound. I think we peak around 3 pm, lets see what happens.

Looks like the worst of the wind is staying to the southeast of the metro and hugging the coast. Wind has not been very impressive here.

What? There's been winds close to 70 up in Westchester and here in Northern Queens, we were consistently gusting up to 50+ in late morning and are back to very strong gusts the last 30 minutes or so. It's not just confined to the southeast part of the region.

61 mph gust at Islip and 66 at Orient.

Note that islip airport is well inland from the water, unlike JFK. So those gusts are representative of what we are seeing. We are consistently in the 55 mph range, with a few around 60

@Allsnow

is a 61 mph gust advisory or warning criteria?

Warning.

High Wind
Sustained wind speeds of 40 mph or greater lasting for 1 hour or longer, or winds of 58 mph or greater for any duration.
So we meet it despite what others say.

Crews out around here to work on the downed lines, but Con Ed says this wont be fixed until sometime overnight.  Hooked up the generator to keep the fridge and freezer cold.  That thing is stocked for the next 3 weeks to stay isolated so the food can’t go bad!

winds ripping still.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 8 PM THIS EVENING/...
High impact storm continues with strong S winds, heavy rainfall,
possible severe tstms late from NYC west.

Expanded high wind warning to entire CWA with reports of 60+ mph
winds in the Hudson Valley earlier. Summary LSR just
issued detailing wind and damage reports area-wide.

Precip has become more showery in nature compared to earlier,
with a warm front just to the south and west where
temps/dewpoints are now in the 60s. Radars show LLJ core
approaching, with winds 85-90 kt at FL020 over the ocean just S
of Long Island, with buoy 44025 30 nm south of Islip having just
gusted to 76 mph. So....strongest winds for NYC, Long Island, S
CT should arrive next 2-3 hours, with peak gusts 60-80 mph
expected as the LLJ continues to strengthen, to as high as 100
kt at 900 mb across Long Island mid to late afternoon.

Bands of tstms in the warm sector to the west (where a tornado
watch is in effect) could reach areas from NYC metro west after
4 PM. SPC has expanded slight risk area to NYC doorstep. Given
MLCAPE 500-1000 J/kg and strong, veering low level wind
profiles, embedded supercells in these bands could produce
damaging winds and possibly a tornado.

Expect max temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60s across
Long Island and southern CT, and well into the 60s across NE NJ
and the lower Hudson Valley.

If you don't have an anemometer you really can't  guess what the wind gusts are. I just got back from Jones Beach with a handheld kestrel and the wind was a consisent 25 to 35mph. That was about 7 feet above the ground. Meanwhile back at my house the peak gust is now 41mph and sustained 20mph.

there is a chart that estimates the wind speed called the Beaufort scale...

MPH.....comments...

calm.....smoke rises vertically...

01-03.....wind direction shown by drift of smoke...

04-07.....wind felt on face, leaves rustle, flag stirs...

08-12.....leaves and twigs in constant motion...wind extends light flags...

13-18.....dust, loose papers, and small branches are moved...

19-24.....small trees and leaf begin to sway...wavelets form on inland waters...

25-31.....large branches in motion...whistling telegraph wires...

32-38.....whole trees in motion...walking is hindered...

39-46.....twigs break off trees...

47-54.....slight damage to houses...

55-63.....trees uprooted....much damage to houses...

64-75.....widespread damage.....

over 75..violence and destruction...
