New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an emergency order Monday directing hospitals to increase their capacity by 50% as coronavirus cases across the state surged 38% overnight to 20,875.

New York is the hardest-hit state in the country, ahead of New Jersey, California and Washington state, Cuomo said. New York City, alone, accounts for 12,305 confirmed infections, he said.

This could go on for several months,” Cuomo said. Roughly 13% of all cases have been hospitalized, 621 of the patients have ended up in the ICU and 157 people have died, he said.

“Nobody can tell you is it four months, six months, eight months, nine months. But it is several months,” Cuomo said. “We all have to now confront that that is a new reality. That is not going to change. You are not going to turn on the news tomorrow morning and they’re going to say, ‘Surprise, surprise this is all now resolved in two weeks.’”

Cuomo estimated up to 80% of the state’s more than 19.4 million residents will get the coronavirus. Last week, Cuomo estimated there are likely “tens of thousands” of COVID-19 cases in the state among residents who didn’t know they had it.

“Many people will get the virus but few will truly be in danger,” he said Monday.

On Sunday, Cuomo said the state had 15,168 cases, more than France or South Korea were reporting at the time and those numbers are expected to dramatically rise as the state ramps up testing.

Cuomo has said he worries the outbreak will stretch U.S. hospitals to their maximum capacity, saying the nation doesn’t have enough hospital beds to handle a pandemic. Hospitals across the nation are running low on personal protective equipment. Cuomo said the state has had some luck finding extra gear for doctors and nurses and is sending hundreds of thousands of surgical masks, N95 masks, gloves and gowns to hospitals across the state.

He said he would have liked for hospitals to increase their capacity by 100%, but added that would be unreasonable.

“I think it’s unreasonable to tell hospitals to double their capacity,” Cuomo said. “They must increase by 50% at least.”

On Friday, Cuomo ordered nonessential businesses to keep 100% of their workforce at home and put in place stringent new restrictions on New Yorkers.

Cuomo said he has asked the federal government to nationalize the purchase of medical equipment and has signed off on several locations to build temporary hospitals to treat coronavirus patients.

I see 3-6 weeks of statewide lockdown. Some areas could get relaxed after 4 weeks depending on infection progression.  Thats about how long China kept areas in quarantine.  Cuomo is right, some form of precautions will be kept for months.  OTOH, keeping whole state on lockdown for "months" isn't practical.  Noone can afford it.

1) Took BGM long enough...

2) I have heard a plow truck go past a couple times now.

3) My tooth broke big time today...so now I need to go to the dentist tomorrow....urgh.

Not that there's much Coronavirus around here but that's one of the last places I'd want to go right now, other than a hospital. ;)

That's Bernie Sanders, who seems to be the only politician who actually recognizes that we're at a crossroads where the true elites -- rich people who back Trump -- are deciding how many regular people they need to sacrifice to preserve their wealth.

Literally LOL'd at this.

Instead of working your ass off to get a job that pays well you'd rather point your finger at the people who worked their asses off and say its all a conspiracy to keep you down...

I came from absolutely NOTHING. I saw first hand the only thing free handouts does is enable lazy ass people to continue to be lazy. Food stamps are sold for pennies on the dollar to pay for drugs. EIC tax refunds pay for drugs. This is why the zip code you're born in is the number one indicator of your income as an adult.

Work hard and make the most of every opportunity given to you. Don't piss away $40k on a liberal arts degree. Stop blaming everyone else for your lack of success.

As for the rest of your point media on both sides is biased, so don't take "truth in the middle" so damn literally.

Yeah, I'm at a crossroads. Do I cancel and wait for weeks/months (possibly getting an infection in my mouth) or risk it???

Well, i guess depends on pain / discomfort level?  Fortunately there's not a lot of Corona around here so you've go the odds in your favor if you decide to go in.  Might want to contact Dentist just to see if they're taking anything right now?

Go to the dentist if you can find one that is working.

You are at significant risk of getting an infection in your mouth but almost no risk of getting corona at the dentist's office.

The risk is high for the dentist because they have people breathing and aerosolizing fluids in their face all day long.

You don’t know the first thing about me. You do seem to hate people who you see as lazy, so perhaps you have no problem sacrificing lives to prop up a broken system.

But I pity you and pray that people with actual power don’t think like you.

The system isn't broken, just look at the rest of the world. While we can strive to be better our standard of living surpasses 95% of the global population. People like yourself take that for granted.

Anyone in a position of actual power got there by beating someone else, so in general they have the same attitude towards working hard to get ahead. Some of those people are even willing to gain votes by appealing to people like yourself with free handouts. You think that they have the same ideals as you when really they're just doing whats necessary to stay in their position of power.

I‘m not surprised there are people who are so committed to the idea that only the strong survive, as you are. I think there are a lot of people in power who feel that way, including a lot of hypocrites who pretend to feel otherwise but only want to protect their power.

I just don’t think I hear it expressed with such contempt and rage at the weak and poor. It’s shocking.

I'm 100% behind supporting those who cant provide for themselves, ie the weak as you put it. But being poor isn't necessarily not for a lack of effort on that persons part. My stance is to help those who cant help themselves, but increase handouts to the level of socialism and you're enabling. Its why socialism fails.

4 1/4 inches since 1 brings the storm total to 6.6 inches.  So much for T - 2 inches.  Really heavy stuff too.

My nephew and I just shoveled and snowblowed the driveway.  It was faster shoveling.  I let him do that. ;)

This is exactly why I'm taking this serious...

Everyone's body is different..

Among the deaths: a 34-year-old man in Rome with no existing health conditions (according to reports) who died after being hospitalized for 4 days in sub‐intensive care.
