The connection between the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) and the rest of the atmosphere

Hi!

I'm a student from Austria and to graduate in Austria we need to write a so-called "pre-scientific" thesis. I chose to write about Dimethylsulfide and possible impacts on the climate (mainly analysing the CLAW hypothesis) and in the course of my research on this topic I have encountered a few publications that have evaluated several specific processes and substances in the Marine Boundary Layer and taken implications for CLAW out of those results (e.g. Quinn and Bates 2011).

Since I am no expert in meteorology or any subject concerning the atmosphere for that matter, I was wondering if somebody could explain to me what the connection between the MBL and the rest of the atmosphere is and how significant this connection is. (Would be awesome if someone could recommend me some studies and publications concerning this topic!)
