Did not know what to expect this evening.

When I got out there it looked just like yesterday...

But as the Sun got lower and lower in the sky, a streak of cirrus or smoke that stretched from Kansas to Indiana on the visual satellite, started to become visible...

8 hours ago, Eskimo Joe said:

Nice picture. It's almost criminal to not be throwing a frog in that water. Looks like some prime bass fishing.

Thanks. And trust me there are people out there almost every day doing just that. Drowning a frog. When the weather starts getting cooler again I will have the place more to myself.

I originally thought tonight would be a bust. But as I was leaving the diner, the Sun snuck under the clouds and it turned out to be rather fanciful. I di not have time to drive to the pond though.

Just ran home grabbed the camera and hobbled a block to the other side of the bank. Plopped the camera down in the middle of the road and snapped this...

7V2A1942.thumb.JPG.1d7519b4ff5a645214b3c4d01aa1f0d5.JPG

Then I hobbled another block west to the Courthouse Square and opened the 16-35mm all the way open to 16mm and got this...

The red flash looking due west straight down the street...

And the extreme post sunset colors as the lights of the Square were taking over...

After dinner I sa that the better color would be towards the south. So I grabbed the camera, hopped in the car and tried to find a spot fast. Stopped in a church parking lot[ but the trees on the southern edge were too tall and blocking the view. So I got in the car and kept heading south. It was either trees in the way or wires. I ended up driving all the way to the pond and got there right at the peak color.

It was all downhill after this image and on this image I had just pulled up left the car running and the door swinging open to get this image looking due south...

It was another one of *those* nights. Glad I took a trip out to the pond. Well worth the effort.

Just going to start with a bang and begin with the star of the yellow post sunset...

First I did the sunrise, now I am going to do a sunset. My way of celebrating summer, a two fisted affair.

This first image is just for comparison. Hard to believe that this is what preceded the rest...

7V2A3522.thumb.JPG.504eb1d5f4ee8106a1e4abf0896ea370.JPG

Right around sunset...

7V2A3564.thumb.JPG.baed0837472a6608e6a6c34eda512c95.JPG

Hard to believe but to get from that first image to this is pretty amazing. The backside of the cloud shield got just close enough in Illinois to give me this...

Some nice cloud shadows in the top and bottom cloud layer as the color was fading...

Kind of figured that tonight would be a bust. But it was a very close thing.

When I got out there, looking to the south...

Best I could do with the color. It was obviously red but just on the other side of the cloud layer. Gave a creepy pink cast to the sky...

Went out for the sunrise again this morning.

Just going to start with the max dynamics. Some sort of vague yellow crepuscular rays going on also...

As the reds fade and the yellows dominate...

And going to finish with the start of the sunrise on the horizon...

My idea of the perfect ending to the unofficial end of summer. Out taking cloud pics from sun-up to sun-down.

When I got to the pond looking south. And for comparison for a future image...

For comparison with the first image. The best color was to the east and south...

Last image of the night is from more to the east...

The last image of the night I am proud of for how I took the image. I had packed everything up for the evening and had turned around to walk back to the car when I looked over the shoulder and saw this. I took this handheld, holding the tripod off of the ground. Surprised just how sharp it was when taken at 1/20th of a second. Have to pat myslef on the back for not missing this...

No clouds last night, obviously, but the smoke shield there in western Illinois is the dirty yellow on the horizon and there is some extremely faint crepuscular rays going on here...

7V2A7274.thumb.JPG.f1ebacdb2459da86630e21458da89683.JPG

Just some more info. This was taken at 7:44 P.M.. The moon was 17 degrees above the horizon. It was at 241degrees or WSW. And 8.4% illuminated ( at lunar noon). This was taken with my 100mm. Now you have the rest of the story.
