The 500 mb pattern is a classic one for high precipitation events in January when the Arctic Oscillation is positive: Since 1871, Chicago has had just 16 storms bring 1.50" or more precipitation over a two-day period in January. I posted a while back about how it is even more rare to have a 2"+ precip event including at least 1" of snow in the month of January.
