gravitylover
28/28/E2/freezing mist That Somers number might be right, it's been above freezing in most of the town since about 10 this morning. Unfortunately the high spots, like where I live .25 miles from the Somers line, is still stuck at 28.4.

And the south shore got plenty of ice last night, the winds were from the NE, so it really didnt matter how close they were to the water.

Yes but we recorded very small amounts (trace, under a tenth) here in Nassau county, so I think urbanization plays a major role here.

NE winds near 10KT at the surface and SW winds 50KT+ at 4000 feet. This wind difference often slows down air traffic into the NY metro airports. A 767 reported severe turbulence coming into JFK earlier this morning. RGEM forecast soundings valid at 15Z show what would be a nice hodograph if there were surface based instability. NorthShoreWx
Down to 32.3 here with light rain. Max this afternoon was 34.1 at 1:21 pm, min was 31.1 at 4:01 am (and earlier). The glaze over a coating of sleet and a little bit of snow last night was not an issue. A little colder and/or not so warm over the preceding weekend and this would have been quite an ice-storm. I hear it was so just a little bit inland. As for hours of freezing rain last night mostly running off, we just didn't get past that equilibrium point for more efficient ice accretion. Between temps near 60 over the weekend and latent heat release from the rain that did freeze, we were right on that edge and surfaces just didn't cool enough. Still I'm impressed at how well the low level cold held in place near the coast.

Yeah sure if the hilltops were a few thousand feet higher ;) It's not an inversion. Just to play by the rules since it is an OBS thread... 28/28/RN This is terrible, going on 18 hours of freezing precip now. Power lines are sagging, trees are leaning, it's just a matter of time before the problems start.

Our max today is right now at 31. Under 100 customers were without power in Sussex Counties Sussex Rural Cooperative. 10,000 customers were without power in threat of NJ late this afternoon with most in Morris and Hunterdon Counties.
