Close to real time, and just bringing this up, because of the lack of sea ice in this region, and the cause and effect relationship in this new era of reduced sea ice and forcing patterns.

This is one region where sea ice recovery has been almost nonexistent so far this Fall.

Cool post by Tom.

MRB tied their low temperature record this morning from 1950.  The first "storm of the century" happened less than two weeks later that year.

Also, MRB missed by one degree from tying the low max record for today, 35 set in 1935.

I'd love to see a replay of that. Even though DC was on the warm side ... but from what I've read, there really wasn't a consistently "warm" side because of the low's crazy movement. Snowed in Pittsburgh while it rained in Buffalo. Right up there with 1993 as an extreme event.

Some legit cold out there this morning.
