Years that remained cold for both months finished in the top 20 coldest winter average temperatures since 1950. The forum really enjoyed the 02-03 and 95-96 snowfall outcomes. They would have liked 00-01 more if some of the March snowstorm forecasts verified.

This is exactly what I found back in the early 90s.  Cold Novembers result in winters that are either much delayed or denied (the majority of the time.)

The key to getting a cold and snowy December with the 2002, 2000, and 1995 cases was a -NAO.

For the 80s, did NYC just miss out on some storms?  I found this for Rutgers, and it looks like they actually averaged slightly more in the 80s than the 90s. For my own measurements (aided by RU until 1987), I had the 80s at 27.89 vs 27.02 for the 90s, so practically a wash.

I missed 1989...the only cold Nov-Dec that had a mild winter...

the 1980's were very disappointing for snow lovers...the only big storms 9" or more came in Feb. 1983 and April 1982...the difference between the 1980's and 1990's were 1993-94 and 1995-96 had historic winters...

Its pretty strange.  You wonder if May being warm or cold correlates the same way to June-Aug reversing.  I definitely know a few years like 1996 and 2002 saw May be the complete opposite of summer which ended up pretty cold in both cases though 2002 had a pretty meaningless late comeback in the last 2 weeks of August which skewed it

This is probably the closest the first fall freeze has been to the last mid 90’s around NYC. The shortest reversal of this pattern I could find for the spring was April 1976.

Newark

2019-10-02 96 67 81.5 19.8

NYC

1976-04-12 43 25 34.0 -17.9
1976-04-18 96 70 83.0 29.0

I think NYC averaged under 20" of snow during the 80s.

For the first half of the 80's when I still lived in Oceanside there was only one storm that really sticks out in my head, the others were pretty forgettable. Those were the years that put more than half of the ski areas in the region out of business because they couldn't invest in snowmaking. As you went further north it wasn't bad at all but below I90 was pretty terrible.

I love this weather

I root for some cold weather in winter because it's needed for snow, but I hate a cold blast like this in November. I would love to go outside for a run this evening, but it's too cold for running. So I'll use the exercise bike inside instead, which I don't like nearly as much as running. I don't know how someone can call this type of weather comfortable, but I guess some people like bundling up.
