eyewall
The Fall Foliage Guy suggests a peak around Grandfather Mountain between 10/15 and 10/20 or so. I plan on trying on Tue.
Tyler Penland
The Fall Foliage Guy suggests a peak around Grandfather Mountain between 10/15 and 10/20 or so. I plan on trying on Tue. Just came over grandfather on the way home from work to check it out. Color is coming along really nicely on the ridges between Beacon Heights and the Viaduct. Fairly vibrant at that. Rough Ridge as well. Otherwise very early stages at road level still. I'm hopefully heading up Cragway tomorrow since they've reopened it. Color looks great up there from what little you can see from the road. Here's a crappy phone pic from the Beacon Heights parking lot. Still lots of low clouds on that side.
Buckethead
Here is how the leaves are progressing in my yard at 4400'. I'm noticing probably 10% of the trees have already browned and lost a majority of their leaves here in NW Yancey County. Sorry it's a crappy phone pic, my Nikon went in the river today. 1
Met1985
Good morning! Boy this morning was cool and crisp! Had a low of 47 degrees. I am looking forward to even cooler nights this weekend.
Tyler Penland
Color about 2-3 weeks behind on the upper reaches of Grandfather. Coming along nicely and actually looks pretty good so far.

No way these trees stand a chance of much color this year. My yard is already full of dead leaves here in the Triad. you're probably right... I have seen foliage change rapidly in the northeast within a few days before. The weather has certainly been more favorable for that now. I plan on getting some aerials too (legal if you launch from a 221 pull off nearby).
Met1985
Wooo! First 30s of the season! Had a beautiful low of 38 degrees this morning! Frost will be coming soon this week!

WxKnurd
Good to see things are coming along at home, in Colorado elk hunting (well I’m done now since I filled my tag opening evening on Saturday, just been packing neat out since). Was a crisp -1 Friday morning at 10k feet! Temps have slowly been warming to average, which is where it will stay the rest of our time out here. Love the mountains, whether they are at home or here in the Western Rockies!
Met1985
Another cool morning with a low of 38 again. Windows are open in the house and its 59 degrees lol. Love it.
Buckethead
It was 50° when I left my house at 7 am. By the time I got to Burnsville (1600' lower) it was 35° with frost in places again. I love those inversions! Pulled this off my dashcam from the ride this morning.
eyewall
I took a quick trip up very early this morning. Very frosty near Price Lake. Fall color was very patchy with moderate color just south of the Linn Cove Viaduct in a small area. I caught sunrise by that bridge and unfortunately two idiots were stopped on the road with their flashers on ruining the scene and also it was dangerous. I will make another attempt next week.
Buckethead
Pulled thus off my dashcam as well about an hour ago. This is in Wolf around 3800'. I'm noticing a lot more red in the canopy today, especially above 4000'.
Tyler Penland
36 at the house this morning with a solid frost. Car showed a chilly 33 coming through Banner Elk on the way to work this morning. Loving it. Just seen Boone recorded 32 this morning.
eyewall
I will be posting ground and aerial shots of what I witnessed this morning. Coldest temp my car read was 33F by Price Lake. Anyway I think the foliage will do alright by Grandfather this year so long as there isn't too much blow down in the coming days. I don't think it will be a widespread blanket of peak color this year but there will be some photos to be had. I noticed a few areas in the distance with brownout ongoing, but still lots of green to change as well.

Tyler Penland
Worth noting the 3km NAM actually shows some flurries on Thursday morning in the high elevations. Tries to get them down into Boone even.

Buckethead
The GFS still has the first flakes of the season around next weekend. It'll be interesting to see if there's support from other models in the next few days.
Met1985
Had a low of 34 this morning but no frost with the constant wind. Tonight will be much different. What a pattern change from a few weeks ago.
Met1985
Woooo! Had a heavy frost this morning with a low of 30 degrees! Man what a 2 week pattern change. With this cold snap and freezing/frosty temps I do believe we can salvage our fall color this year and its not over yet...
