Just a few stragglers left now on the Beeches and Aspens. Sugarloaf1989 Posted October 22, 2019 Share Posted October 22, 2019 It's past peak here in Enfield as well as Broad Brook and Somers. The tree's are about 25% bare. We are starting the transition from Maple foliage to Oak foliage. Some Oaks are 100% turned to Fall color, which is about 5-7 days early. I suspect it will be mostly bare around here by 11/1. eyewall Posted October 23, 2019 Share Posted October 23, 2019 Foliage in the NC Mountains is a patchwork rather than a blanket peak due to adverse conditions early on. The highest terrain has a lot of leaf drop and much of it has gone past peak. Where leaves are still changing, you can literally drive from almost all green to solid color around a corner or two. CapturedNature Posted October 23, 2019 Author Share Posted October 23, 2019 This is kind of foliage related as I planned on doing a hyperlapse of walking through the woods this past weekend with the foliage in the woods as I picked up one of my game cameras but it turned out to be cloudy and not as many leaves were falling after the storm and I had to deal with dropped branches (one large one shows up in the video) but I thought I would share: This other one is a day to night timelapse that I did a couple of weeks ago. We have pockets of sticks here too. The colorful oaks help keep some of the color alive but the maples, birches, etc. are fading very fast. What I find interesting this time of year is how it's a reverse of spring. In the spring the forest floor or smaller vegetation starts greening up and then the trees. Notice my Bradford Pear in the picture is still green. I shook the snow of it to save it two days later. My Dad's was to large to save that way and it split down the middle. I drove up to Beech NC, the highest city East of the Mississippi. I also drove up Mt Mitchell, the highest point in the Eastern US.
