September opens with 80.3/58.5 and closes with 69.5/45.8. August opens with a day length of 14:26:49 and closes at 13:11. September opens with 13:09 and closes with 11:47. September starts out the first ten days or so as a continuation of August, but then things start happening in a hurry. The shorter days start getting noticeable. The pretty large dip in average high produces some of the most spectacular days a given year has to offer, usually somewhere around 9/15 through 10/5 or so. Bluebird skies, highs in the 70s, very low humidity, smells of earth and fall. I love winter, but that short stretch of fall takes a close second. Agree with the beautiful weather in late September. I call it dull, but I also find it very enjoyable. (Other than weather extremes, I like dull). It gives me a last chance to do outside, summer type activities. For example, the fishing is great at that time of year.

cyclone77
Picked up 0.19" this morning. Was enough to encourage a few sprouts of crab grass and add a few more mosquitoes to the population
hawkeye_wx
The dewpoint has really shot up today. It is now 75º. There is no wind at all, so it's pretty sultry outside, even though clouds kept the temp down a bit today. Monday's rain event is now not looking so great for much of Iowa. This summer has been a broken record.

cyclone77
Picked up 0.27" of rain today. 1-2" was looking fairly likely with this 2-day event, but it ended up being a very wussy setup overall.

The further north you go in our subforum, the better August/September tend to be, with the more active jet stream and plenty of warm, but not unbearable summer/early fall days. The Ohio Valley tends to bake and dry out in those months, so I can see how the summer doldrums could set in.

cyclone77
If you would have told me back in early June that we'd be in a moderate drought by mid August there's no way I would have believed it. Went from one extreme to the other. Only 1.57" total since July 1st.
Castaway
Just had an impressive morning storm move in and now 2 round following right behind it in dupage. Just missed out on the hail. But it got really dark. Strong gusting and a few respectable bangers around with ctg’s. 70 degrees with dew at 69. It was a matter of time til we had respectable storms in August from an otherwise quiet summer. Noticed that happens here in the past and saw it coming. hawkeye_wx
We were in a good spot this morning. The line intensified a bit as it moved in and then a big rain shield filled in behind the line. I finished with a great 1.61" of rain. The far north side of Cedar Rapids received nickel size hail, but I did not see any. The wind gusted to 30-40 for a bit, but it wasn't bad. This is the first time all summer an expected heavy rain event verified. OT: About a week ago, this site(only this site) suddenly became very slow & laggy for me. It makes typing posts difficult. Any idea what the issue could be? OT Update: There is a thread about this on the home page that has a few posts, but that's it.

Levi changed the way the maps load to make them load slower to reduce server load. Now instead of loading all the frames at once, it only loads the current and then a few on either side. 1
Chicago Storm
Just got back yesterday from being up in Eagle River since the 10th. Had fairly good weather up there most of the time, with a few bouts of rain/storms a few of the nights. Did a bunch of hiking, kayaking, boating, etc. Also ventured up into the UP for one day as well, not too far from Bo country. Looks like I didn't miss too much down here. A few bouts of rain/storms in the area, but didn't miss much imby.
hawkeye_wx
I received another 1.53" of rain this morning. We had lightning and thunder for 2-3 hours, the best of the season. My 3-day total is 3.14". While there was little wind during the rain, strong wind (40+ mph) at the back edge caused garden damage and blew bird feeders down. Not to mention this series of MCSs is doing wonders for our dry stretch.
cyclone77
Nice soaker this morning, picked up 0.82". Was pretty impessive how dark it got for quite awhile as the storms came through. The book-end vortex passed right through the QC. Looked sort of like a tropical system on radar.
