They are gorgeous, I was thinking of planting some.  Can they last through bad winters here, like 2010-11?

More non native species... We just keep introducing more and more things that don't really belong.

I was a few minutes from LGA yesterday at the USTA, there was a thermometer on the south side that was over 90 for a few hours. I went back to check it 3 times because it was so hot on some of the more exposed courts.

Two rather strong cold fronts coming through this week one late Wednesday and one post Dorian. The one after Dorian  looks rather impressive with 0c 8 50s into central New England. Looks like the period From August 20th through the fall Solstice could average well below normal for our area. We'll see how it all plays out but summer was basically one month, July, and one week in August.

Just because the number of 90+ days was officially low doesn't mean it wasn't a very warm summer. All you had to do was get away from the coast. It has been a long, warm, humid summer here with very little rain since mid June. I know that our electric bill is higher than I'd like it to be because the AC has been doing double duty since the spring right up until last week.

I shan't complain

The Euro seasonal from back in March did a nice job with the summer forecast. Warmth along the coasts with cooler in the middle. Really nailed the record heat signal for Alaska

Did great in the warm months but the past winter forecast was way off. Why?

Is it because we are in a warming climate and calling for warmth is simply the easy win most times?

Well June was not warm and neither was August take away the one week when it was hot.that leaves July. I've seen many many worse summers over the years. I've had plenty of 88 and 89 Degree Days with dew points in the upper 50s and low 60s that's perfect summer weather to me

It wasn’t able to figure out the more Niña-like pattern ahead of time. So the more Niño looking seasonal forecast didn’t work out.

^^ This August was considerably more comfortable  than last August... A  3° difference is considerable in summer.

And all my wife and daughters did every time we did something outdoors was complain about how hot it was. I thought it was pretty great! A little humid many days but overall it was a good outdoor summer for me.

Are stats kept for high minimums? I know there were more warm overnight lows this year than last.

Only 1 less 70 degree minimum this summer than last year at LGA. But a wider spread between last year at other stations like ISP.

Different climate there. Looking at my records, I have 16 70F+ minima [actually impressively high for here, due to high dews]. Departure was slightly under +1, and 15 90F days.

My departure here wound up at -0.2° for the month...Rainfall of 3.98" was slightly below normal (Normal is 4.10")It was only my 2nd below normal precipitation month over the previous 19. Again had over 70" over the past 12 months. Summer stats showed about a +1° departure with 18,  90+° days.

I look at summers like 2010 very fondly, I love dry heat, not this humid crap!

I dont like the non native bugs that are finding their way here either :P

thats not a climate lol, thats a microclimate ;-)

It's actually a different climate zone [that is, my area of CNJ versus LGA] if you utilize any climate classification system as an arbiter. As per the Trewartha climate system, I am in "Dc - Continental" and LGA is "Oceanic." And if you employ the Koppen system, my area is "Continental-Hot summer" whereas LGA is "Sub-tropical" [using the 0C isotherm coldest month system].

This August is another example of less warm is the new cool. Relatively low number of August 90 degree days for the 2010’s this month. JFK hasn’t reached 90 degrees since July 21st.

I thought JFK hit 91 in August, their 1 90 degree day that month.

Do you think we should start defining "hot" as days with a heat index of 90+ to include humidity?

the weird thing though is when I drive from Manhattan into Queens, my car thermometer always spikes up around the Grand Central and the temps fall back down again when I get on the Van Wyck.  Northern Queens seems to be hotter in the summer than any other part of the city and even hotter than NE NJ (like the area near the Lincoln Tunnel.)  The area from the Midtown Tunnel to the Grand Central is the hottest part of the metro from what I've experienced.

When I get down by JFK, the temps are several degrees lower.
